Ally covered her ears. “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that, or I’ll end up pushing you into the road.”

“Wait, hear me out…”

Chad raised his eyebrow. “We’re listening.”

“Everyone dressed up, alcohol flowing, tongues loosening. We might find out some information.”

“Are you suggesting we go?”

“Yeah, undercover,” Josh said.

Ally snapped her fingers. “I know exactly what you should go as.”

“What’s that?”

“The man whose brain fell out.”

Josh’s brow knitted together. “I don’t know who that—”

“Or perhaps the dumb detective murdered by his sergeant. That’s got a good ring to it.”

“Ha. How funny of you…”

“I’m not joking.” She pinched the air. “I’m this close. We can nickname you jolly Josh.”

He squeezed the top of his nose. “I don’t know why I’m asking, but I am … why jolly Josh?”

“Because that’s what I’ll string you up with.”

“And what are jollies?”

“Your testicles.”

“Chad?” Josh asked, leaning closer. “Help me out here. What do you think?”

“He thinks it’s ludicrous.”

“Let him speak for himself.”

“I think…” They both stared at him, pleading with him. Josh mouthed please over and over. “I think I’m with Ally on this. It’s a bad idea.”

Josh’s smile fell.

“Finally, someone is speaking sense,” Ally said.

“Fine, I’ll go on my own.”

“You can’t.”

“Why not?”

“We’re working a case.”

“So? There are no rules about what I do in my spare time.”

“I think you’ll find there is.”

“Maybe I’ll go as Hannibal,” Josh said, rubbing his chin.
