“Why did you get offered one here?”

“I don’t know.”

“And why didn’t you turn it down?”

Chad couldn’t think of a reply.

He bristled. “Why does it bother you that I didn’t?”

“I find it odd.”

“What’s your name?”

The man paused. “It’s Jeffery.”

“Why are you so against me being here?”

“I don’thaveto like it, do I?”

“No, but—”

“Then I don’t.”

“Just to clarify, you don’t like me here, not here as in the shop, or the street—”

“The county. Bardhum. You shouldn’t have moved here. I don’t know why you did.” Jeffery narrowed his eyes. “You should’ve taken that huge pay out you received from the Canster Times and disappeared.”

“I’m a detective.”

“From the moment you got captured by Romeo Knight, you were no longer a detective. No one will see you as one first, they will always see the men that took you. You’re weak. Romeo knew it, that’s why he didn’t kill you.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know enough.”

“You think because you’ve watched one documentary series you know Romeo? You think you know me? Or why he didn’t kill me in the farmhouse?”

“It’s obvious why he didn’t kill you.”

“I’m listening.”

“You were an added thrill, the extra scare to terrorize the town. He easily overpowered the detective looking for him and by keeping you alive the public could speculate what horrors were being performed on you.”

“Let me guess, some supposed criminal psychologist came up with that?”

“You were nothing but a pawn and got famous off the back of him.”

“Famous?” Chad gritted his teeth. “You think I like people knowing who I am and what happened to me?”

“You would’ve quit your job if it truly bothered you, and disappeared. Now, is there anything else I can help you with Mr. Fuller?”

“Detective Fuller.”

Jeffery smiled, “Good luck with the investigation, detective.”

Chad walked past him and left the shop. Jeffery continued to stare at him through the window while he waited for Josh to jog over from the bookies.

“Anything?” Josh asked.
