“No. The owner hates my guts though.”

“Jeffery?” Josh said. “He seems nice enough.”

“Have you ever been into the basement.”

“No, I hate art. Ready to DIE.”

Chad glanced his way. “What?”

“I meant, are you ready to go to DIE … TIDE. The cafe? I’m starving.”

“Oh, right, yeah.”

Josh led the way, rubbing his stomach. Chad shot one last glance at Jeffery before following.

The cafe seemed an afterthought—this was a shop to be lectured inside.

Pretty on the outside, but frustrating on the inside.

“Are you aware that 5.25 trillion pieces of trash are floating in the ocean at this very moment?”

Chad had already been quizzed about how long it took for plastic, tin, and aluminum to decompose. Every time he got a pop question wrong, the frown fixed on him deepened.

He nodded along, then shook his head. “No, I didn’t know that.”

Julie, the shop owner, tipped her chin up, flicking her disapproving gaze up and down. She was a small woman, but compensated for her height with a loud, barking voice. Every time she snapped at Chad her glasses slid down her nose. “That’s arealcrime.”

Chad cleared his throat. “I was wondering if you’d answer some questions.”

Julie folded her arms. “You’re not done answering mine.”

“Mine is a matter of urgency.”

“Is the agonizing, yet preventable death of our planet not urgent?”

Josh nudged Chad’s side. “Yeah, Chad, get your priorities right.”

Chad pressed his lips in a grim smile, and stood on Josh’s foot, slowly applying pressure.

“Are you mocking me?” Julie snapped.

Josh’s mouth bobbed open and closed. “No—”

“Have you not looked at anything on the bookcase?”

The bookcase overflowed with depressing handmade books and folders about how everyone was doomed.

Josh picked up a folder, purely made up of pictures of animals caught in the garbage, and snapped it shut. “Jesus.”

“I’ve got another bookcase downstairs full of these books and folders.”

“Did you ever meet Justin or Damian?” Chad asked.

“No.”

“Do you get on with Pete Jamerson?”
