Orion nods as we get to the living room, where the doors are still closed. “Yeah, I can handle that. I also didn’t mean what I said as a bad thing. I’m a bit stunted when it comes to normal emotions, so they confuse me.” Staring at the door, he sighs. “I'm getting a crash course though, and it’s a bit overwhelming.”

Pressing my lips together because this psychopath is kind of adorable, I shrug. “The lot of us are chaotic… we’re musicians, what do you expect?”

Orion snorts. “Derek isn’t one and he confuses me the most.”

“Aye, I get that. It’s because that boy is special, with a really big heart. Don’t fuck it up,” I growl.

Blinking at me, he nods, grasping the handle to go in. “I won’t. I mean, I’m trying not to,” he says softly before hurrying inside.

“If he wasn’t such a scary motherfucker, I’d say he almost shit his pants there, Ror,” Greg says softly, leaning against the wall next to me.

Snorting, I shrug. “Means I still got it. I need a task I can handle, so I’m not thinking about what’s happening on the other side of this wall,” I admit.

Nodding, Greg pushes off the wall. “Crew,” he calls out and the man turns towards him.

“Yeah, Fox,” he says with his eyebrow raised.

“Meet your newest recruit to clear patient rooms in the dangerous lock down unit,” Greg tells him and I nod.I can handle this.“You’re strong enough to help if they’re combative, but gentle enough to help calm them down.”

“Got it,” I tell him, rocking my neck back and forth to release some pressure. “Lead the way. I need something to do.”

Crew grins, his white smile blinding. His dirty blond hair is cut closely to his scalp, and I wonder if his name is a nickname. “I’m not a genie, but I can easily make that happen,” he says.

I know Lennon is in good hands, but I’m not the best person to be in that room. I can’t help but feel too much when it comes to her, and I know the medic needs to make sure it’s safe to leave with her.

“Can I make another request?” I ask suddenly as I follow Crew.

His eyes flick over to me, hands open in front of him as if to say, “can you?”

“Please tell me we’re burning this hell hole down once we get everyone out. I don’t even need to see it happen, maybe send me a photo or something,” I request.

Crew barks out a laugh as we take a turn towards the back part of the building. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s on Greg’s long list to do tonight. Let’s clear these cells. He managed to get a message out to our base and there’ll be a helicopter landing in the front yard to get Lennon out of here. We need to get her hydrated and stabilized,” he explains.

I open my mouth to ask if it’s safe for her to go to a regular hospital, but Crew beats me to it. “We’ve got a private hospital for our people because we’re all ghosts in the system,” he explains. “You can choose one person to go with her in the chopper, and then one of us will drive you out to it. It’s not a far drive, either.”

Sighing, I grunt, “Best genie ever,” and he smirks.

This rescue mission is complicated, but all I care about is that Lennon is safe and going to be taken care of.

Seeing my Lavender like this is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Yes, regardless of the blood stained blonde hair, and the copper scent of her skin, she’ll always be my Lavender. Lennon could be bald, and it wouldn’t make a difference in how her soul calls to mine.

Standing sentinel for Lennon is also a privilege.

Roark is sick with grief, seeing the full reality of what happened, but I have to be the rock while he falls apart. I can’t even blame him, because Roark is our protector. In his mind, we didn’t find her soon enough.

The medic looks up as she shakes her head. “The only thing embedded under her skin is her birth control, which is a blessing and surprise that they didn’t remove it. I think they missed finding it,” she says. “Help me get her dressed?”

Orion ghosted in and out quickly to deliver the clothing, just in case Lennon woke up. He was worried about freaking her out. At some point, we will need to properly introduce them.

I step forward, quickly dressing her in warm clothes.

Lennon’s eyelashes stir, and I freeze in front of her. As they open, I see her gray eyes for the first time in way too long. “Hey, Lavender,” I whisper.

She blinks as tears roll down her cheeks. “They changed my hair,” she cries, and I don’t care, I pull her into my arms when she reaches for me, blood stained and all.

I couldn’t care less.
