“What are you talking about?”

“I thought I was the villain they’d portrayed me to be on the show.”

The producers encouraged Elle to kiss the boy who had another girlfriend. The viewers didn’t know she didn’t like him, that it was scripted. She looked like the bitch in that situation.

“I couldn’t forgive myself either. I felt awful. Gray helped me see that I wasn’t that person. We were left to our own devices at sixteen and fourteen. I tried to shield you, but I couldn’t. We aren’t to blame for our absentee parents. We did the best we could, and when we matured, we changed. We did things a different way. You aren’t the same person who tried to manipulate me to come back to the reality show spin-off.”

What she was saying made sense, and it helped to know she went through something similar. When she needed me, though, I was trying to get her to come back to California. To leave her business and Gray. Everything she loved.

“I don’t know if I can. I feel so guilty.”

“Every day, you say,I forgive myself. I’m a good person. You let it go because you’re the only one holding on to it. In here.” She patted her heart.

“I love you, sis.” I hugged her again because I was overcome with emotion.

When she pulled back, I wiped the tears from my face. “I didn’t come over here for a heart-to-heart.”

“It was long overdue though.”

“I wanted to see if we could include Sam and Maggie in one of our family dinners.”

“That’s a great idea. Amelia would love to hang out with Maggie. And it would give me a chance to get to know Sam better.”

“Why do you need to get to know him?” I asked, genuinely confused.

She smirked. “Because you’re crushing on him.”

“I am not.” I felt like we were teenagers again, talking about a boy in school.

“I can tell by the way you talk about him. It’s like you admire him.”

“I’m usually a little stunned when someone’s a great parent.” It had nothing to do with the fact that I was attracted to my boss. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself. The fact was, Sam was so much more than a great dad; he was hardworking, protective, and caring.

“It’s more than that.”

“Even if I liked him, which I don’t, there’s nothing I could do about it. I like my job. I’m living with him.”

Elle grinned. “That makes it even easier to hook up.”

“Are you even listening to yourself right now? Why would I want to hook up with my boss, who I’m living with?”

“Didn’t mean to interrupt,” Gray said with his hands up as he backed out of the room.

My cheeks heated that Gray overheard us.

“I’m just saying. You need to live a little,” Elle said, her tone light.

“I’m not sleeping with Sam when Maggie is in the house.”

“Why not?” Elle persisted.

“It’s not right.”

Elle gave me a look. “So, you think I don’t have sex with Gray because of Amelia?”

I covered my ears like I had done a billion times when we were little. “La la la. I can’t hear you.” Finally lowering them when I thought Elle was done talking about sex, I continued. “I try not to think about you two… ya know.”

Elle lowered her voice. “Just so you know, couples with kids have sex.”
