My heart sings as he says my name. He remembers.

He remembers me.

Is this a dream?

I step closer, trying to get out of range of the cameras. It’s a balancing act. If I am too far away, an alert will go off. If I stay too close to the house, our entire conversation will be caught on audio. Never before have I tried to avoid detection.

Cam makes me break so many nevers.

“Yes.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I live here.”

“Here? In L.A.?”

“Do you live in the neighborhood, too?”

Perhaps I ask too eagerly because he flinches.

“Uh, kind of.”

“How do you ‘kind of’ live somewhere?” My joking tone covers up the breakneck speed of my heart. If Jason or Malcolm find us, Cam could be the next Rudy.

Dead on the ground, blood pooling everywhere.

“I’m on an assignment. Short-term.”

“Assignment? What do you do? Sounds dangerous.”

When he smiles, he is my moon. No need to search for it in the dark sky. Cam is my moon and stars, and I want this conversation to last forever.

“Very boring. I’m an accountant. Tax accountant.”

“That does sound boring.” I know nothing about this. I have never had a job. I know that taxes are money you earn and give to the government so we have roads, bridges, military forces, and schools. For Cam to work with money like this means he must be very important.

He moves closer. Two more steps and he could touch me.

I ache to have him touch me.

“What about you? What do you do for a living?”

A sound inside makes me jerk back and look, instantly terrified. If Jason catches us...

“Paigelynn.” Cam comes closer.

“No! Don’t touch me,” I hiss.

“Why would I touch you?” he asks, looking over my shoulder at the house. “I would never, ever hurt you. Do you understand? Never.”

He sounds so sure. So protective.

All I can do is nod.

And shiver with delight.

“Look, Paigelynn. Or is it Princess?”
