“What does that mean?” she sniffles.

“It means you’re mine now. No one can take you away from me.” She shifts in her seat to look at me, and I feel her gaze burning through me.

“Don’t say you love me, Luka. You don’t hurt the people you love, and that’s all you’ve done to me.”

“I don’t love you. I don’t know what that means.”

“Good. And I will never love you. Is that what you want? A loveless marriage?”

“It had to be done regardless.”

“Why?” Now I turn my head to look at her, loving how she looks at me.

“Because I’m a greedy bastard who wants what he wants, and what I wanted was you.”

I turn back in my seat and watch ahead as the driver takes us to the restaurant where the reception is being held. I usher Delaney out of the car and into the building when we arrive.

“Were you lying about Cody?” Cody, the little asshole I killed years ago for her.

“No. Ask anyone,” I tell her as I lead her further into the building.

The whole restaurant has been transformed into a reception. There are white flowers with purple mixed in. Her favorite color. The tables are set and ready for our guests to arrive, and they damn sure better arrive on time.

“This will never work,” she tells me.

“It will. You’ll just have to deal with it,” I tell her.

“You’re a murderer.”

“Would you have rather married Romano?” I ask her, looking her in the eyes. She doesn’t shake her head or look away from me, and that’s just one more thing I like about her. She doesn’t look away.

“You kill for fun,” she reminds me once more.

“You think it was fun for me to kill my brother?” I ask her seriously.

“I don’t know, Luka. Did you enjoy it?” she asks. I lift my hand and wrap it around her throat before I lean in and nearly press my lips to hers.

“He deserved what he got. They all deserve what they get,” I tell Delaney softly so she can hear me.

“He’s dead.”

“Such a shame,” I tell her. Our lips are inches apart; if I wanted to, I could kiss her, but I won’t. Not yet. She isn’t ready for that yet.

“I will never love you,” she tells me. I smile as I cock my head to the side and study her face.

“Love is such a strong word. I think it’s used too loosely as it is. I don’t think love means what everyone else thinks it means.”

“What the hell does that mean, Luka?”

“It means you’ll form some sort of bond with me. You’ll have needs and wants that I can fill. You’ll be taken care of, Delaney, and I will put a baby in you as an heir.”

“I won’t sleep with you,” she hisses as I chuckle.

“That’s how that works in order to make a baby, Delaney.”

“I will never sleep with you. Not after what you’ve done to me.”

“I’ve saved you. Many times now.”
