She nods. “I can sell something this incredible easier than I can sell books, Emery. Get it tested and give me a list of what it’s best on and what it’s not good on. I’ll do the rest.”

I take a deep breath and hand her the bottle. “Alright Madison, once again, I’m going to trust you. If you’re right, it’ll be game changing. If you’re not, then we’ll end up losing money on this.”

She grins and turns around to walk out the door, but she stops, putting her hand on the doorknob. “Em, I need you to know something.”

I cock my head. I feel like I understand Madison pretty well, but the way she says it makes me a little nervous.

“I’m clingy, and I have a really hard time trusting people. I’ll do my best to believe you, but I need you to keep me informed. This is hard for me, but I’m going to do my best.”

This is almost an easier conversation than the Organo-cleanz conversation. I didn’t know what to expect giving her that product, but this conversation, I’m completely prepared for.

“I will blow up your phone with my itinerary. I know that it’s difficult for you, and I’d be wanting to rip the walls down if we swapped places.”

She gives me a broken smile. “Thank you. I’ve got to go do some networking so I can get things set up, but I want you to know that I really appreciate the effort.”

God, I wish I could do something that would make her feel more secure. I don’t know what else I can do, though. Especially if she’s going to be gone so much over the next month.

This is going to be a problem, but it’s not a problem I can’t solve. I just need to get creative, and for once, I think that I’m going to enjoy the process.

Chapter 36

Madison

“Don’t wear anything under that skirt today.” The words echo in my mind as I catch the bus to work from Em’s house. It feels strange to be walking down the street without underwear on at a little before seven in the morning.

The bus pulls up seconds after I get to the bus stop, and it’s nearly empty. I guess I am leaving a little earlier than most people.

When I sit down on the bus seat, I lean back. My body is still throbbing from waking up to Em’s face between my legs. He didn’t fuck me, but he certainly gave me a good reason to want to live with him.

He still makes me nervous, but I’m wrapping my mind around the idea that when he goes out at night, it’s no different from going to business meetings with women. It’s not exactly the same, but I’m trying to think of it like that. There are plenty of men in the world going to lunch or dinner with a woman as part of their business.

I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how I feel tonight when he goes to an art gallery opening. I don’t know if I’ll want to know all the details, but he’s promised that he’ll give them to me.

This is only temporary. Like a long-distance relationship. Once Aspire is known as the best in the world at ChitChat advertising, he can let the façade slip. Our data will be what pulls the customers in and gives them confidence. Not Emery Brooks.

I just have to be patient.

Which is probably about as enjoyable as a six-month long root canal. I pick up my phone and text Tessa.

Madison Carter:Hey, want to catch up tomorrow night?

I haven’t talked to Tessa in what seems like forever. I moved in with Em the day after we got back from Barcelona. It’s been three days and I haven’t seen my best friend since then.

Tessa Reyes:Sorry. Going to be in Atlanta for three days. Saturday?

I leave on Sunday morning, and I’d hoped to spend Saturday with Em. Maybe I need to show him I have a bit of a life outside of him, though.

Madison Carter:Definitely. You bring the food. I’ll bring the wine.

Tessa Reyes:Hope it’s something tasty. See you then!

I remember how simple life was before I got wrapped up with Em. I haven’t even read a book in over a week. That might be a record, actually. I know that I’ll get one finished tonight since I’ll want to forget about the real world for a few hours while Em’s out.

I lean back and close my eyes, repeating the mantra I’ve chosen as my armor. This situation is only temporary.

When I walk into the office, there’s a buzz in the idea room. Not like a Monday meeting where everyone’s focused on Emery’s door. No, this is more like if a newspaper article about the company had just come out. Everyone’s talking in their little groups in hushed whispers.
