I could cry; I wanted this so badly.

But I was petrified at the same time because all it would take was the slightest graze and I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from plunging over that cliff.

He took several breaths, each so loud and sexual. “Do you want more, Pepper?”

I didn’t move. A question wasn’t the same thing as an order.

“Yes.”

“Do you want to come?”

“Oh God, yes.”

His words were as good as the bite of a flogger.

As good as the lashing of his tongue.

“I promise you that’s going to happen … but I think someone is on his way to your room.” He turned silent. “Pepper, is that Luke I see?”

His question sounded odd.

Like he was confused.

Like my choice of partner had surprised him.

“Yes.”

“Why is Luke on his way to your fucking room right now?”

“Because—”

“I told you to move on from that motherfucker, Pepper!”

“I wanted to, but—”

“You need to get out of there. Right this second. Do you hear me?”

Chills ran through my entire body, every strand of my hair standing on edge while I processed his words, while I took in the tone of his voice.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t using his dominance.

He was warning me that my life was at risk.

“Yes.” I almost dropped the phone; I was shaking so badly. “I—”

“Make up an excuse. Lie. Whatever you have to do, and then have your guard follow you upstairs to your apartment. Make sure his gun is loaded and the safety is off and he’s ready. I’ll call you the second you’re inside.”

Tears were stinging my eyes. “Okay.”

“Pepper … be careful.”

The phone then went dead.

As the sound of the door unlocking began to echo throughout my room, I slid the phone into my robe and tried to gather myself.

I wiped my eyes. I tried to calm my heart.
