“Once you get to Earth, the bond will snap into place. It will lead you to the girl and will aid you in protecting her. But the bonding can be… intense.”

I stepped into the elevator and turned to face Micah, smirking as I said, “I think I can handle babysitting one little girl.”

Micah’s eyes closed as he let out a soft sigh. “Try not to get yourself killed.”

With that uplifting comment, the doors closed and the elevator dropped, sending my stomach straight to my throat.

The doors opened into a bright lobby of sorts. White tile floors, white walls, and not a single decoration in sight. Across from the elevator, a pair of glass doors led to the street outside. Judging by the light coming through them, it was late afternoon.

I took a single step into the lobby and stopped dead in my tracks. Every feeling imaginable exploded in my chest. It was agony and pleasure, grief and joy, love and hate all at once. I didn’t know it was possible to feel so much. My legs gave out beneath me, sending me to my hands and knees on the tile floor. I couldn’t move, couldn’t think. It was all I could do to keep breathing.

And then the feelings dulled to the background, making way for a whole new world of pain. It felt like someone was shoving a fist into my heart. And once it was there, it sent bolts of energy out into every muscle, bone, and organ in my body. It took over, making my whole body go rigid, my head thrown back with a scream that made no noise.

It was too much. I was being burned alive, and I was sure I couldn’t survive it.

And then, without warning, the feeling ended. My body collapsed to the floor, completely spent.

Intense? I could think of a few stronger words Micah could have used to prepare me for that.

I’m not sure how long I stayed on the ground before I got my wits back enough to notice that something was different. The emotions, the pain, and the energy were gone, but there was this presence in my chest. Like a second heart beating inside mine.

The bond was inside me, and I knew it wasn’t going away anytime soon.

With shaking hands, I pushed up to my knees and then pressed one hand to my chest. To the thing beating inside me. What the hell was I supposed to do now?

Sierra

“Sierra?”Merida’s voice made me jump. I hadn’t noticed she was beside me. “Are you okay?”

Well, I woke up with a hangover this morning after drowning my worries in wine. I also watched two people vanish into thin air last night, one of whom I personally stabbed, so I’m a bit off today.Ha. I still wasn’t sure what I really saw yesterday, but I did know that if I told anyone that story, I’d be deemed certifiably crazy. Who would believe me?Ibarely believed me, and I was there.

“I’m fine,” I told Merida. “I had a rough night.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

I wanted to take her up on her offer… Except keeping my reputation as a sane human being had to take first priority. So I shook my head.

“Does it have anything to do with Kylie’s date tomorrow?”

It was a valid question. Kylie’s dates were normally the greatest cause of stress in my life. But that was before I shot and stabbed a man.

I gave Merida a weak smile. “I always worry about Kylie’s dates, but at least she’s trying. And we both know she does have it in her to date guys who aren’t first-rate assholes. She just isn’t great at figuring out who’s an asshole before she gets attached.”

Merida wrapped her arm around my shoulders and squeezed. “What about you? Are you seeing anyone these days?”

I rolled my eyes. “Um, no.” Why was everyone obsessed with my relationship status lately?

“Do you have any plans for your afternoon off?”

“Visit Dad.” I shrugged. “I don’t know what I’ll do after that.” I didn’t exactly have the most exciting life. Maybe Kylie would drag me somewhere after she finished her shift.

I saw Kylie’s Jeep pull into the parking lot through the wall of glass at the front of the café at exactly three fifteen. Damn, she really did want tomorrow off. I had a feeling that learning Aiden had a girlfriend was only making her more desperate to date and prove she was moving on too.

She jogged to the door, already shoving her Fountain of Youth visor over her head. “I’m here.”

I couldn’t help the amused smile that twisted my lips. “I can see that.”
