Kate sighs and shakes her head. “He’s usually really nice,” she whispers, sounding defensive.

Jake grabs two bags out of his pockets and holds them up for us. “If it’s fun you need, one of these will sort you out,” he says.

I stare at him in disbelief. “Is that what I think it is?” I whisper.

Kate bites down on her lip and looks at me. “You wanna try?” she asks and I shake my head, my eyes wide.

“What the hell is that?”

Jake and Kate both chuckle. “Weed,” he says, holding up his left arm. “And coke,” he says, holding up his right arm.

“Cocaine?” I murmur in disbelief, and Jake bursts out laughing.

He looks from me to Kate and grins. “I love you small-town girls,” he says, amused.

I glare at him and pull on Kate’s hand. “We’re fine, thanks,” I snap.

Jake winks at me and presses a kiss to Kate’s cheek. “Come find me later,” he murmurs.

I watch him walk off and then look at Kate. “Tell me you’ve never taken him up on his offer. What a complete psycho. Drugs, really?”

Kate smiles at me and brushes my hair out of my face. “Chill, Milly. I’m far more responsible than you seem to think I am, okay?”

I nod at her in relief and take the drink she’s handing me. I didn’t notice it at first, but left and right people seem to be doing illegal drugs like it’s nothing. I’m familiar with weed and though I haven’t ever done it, I can kinda get why people might find that interesting. But these people here are snorting all kinds of stuff. It’s insane. Kate laughs at my expression and I shake my head.

“Seriously, how do you even know these people?”

She throws her arm around my shoulder and takes a sip of her drink. “Some of them are in my arts classes, and then I kind of just got to know more and more people. I don’t even know. How does anyone at college know anyone?”

I shrug and nod. Fair enough. I’ve gotten to know so many people lately, yet I can’t always remember how I know them.

“Still though, I’m not really comfortable around this crowd,” I admit. I really wanted to try tonight. I wanted to try to have some fun and hang out with Kate, but I’m feeling really out of place here.

“Kate!” someone shouts. I turn around to find a girl that looks vaguely familiar walking up to us. I’ve seen her talk to Kate at parties before, but I’ve never met her.

Kate tenses. “Jen,” she says, smiling tightly.

“You good? What are we doing tonight?” Jen says.

Kate looks at me nervously and shakes her head. “In hindsight, this is probably not really your kind of party. How about we just go home and eat more ice cream?”

Jen rolls her eyes and walks away, but I sigh in relief and nod. I want nothing more than to be in bed right now. Besides, the entire vibe of this party is weird.

“Love you, Kate,” I murmur. She smiles back at me and brushes her hand through my hair. “Love you too, Milly. Come on. Let’s go eat more ice cream until you finally get over that douchebag.”

Chapter 29

Carter

I take another swig of my beer and stare at the TV. I’m startled when Asher snatches the bottle out of my hand.

“Dude, what the fuck?”

He sighs and puts the bottle down. “How long are you going to keep this up?” he asks, gesturing around us. I glance at the mess I’ve made. The living room is littered with pizza boxes and beer bottles.

“Have you even moved from the sofa all week? Have you been going to classes?”

I look away and inhale deeply. “I went to a few.”
