“Nope, that’s it. Thank you and I’ll see you at the compound. I know it’s Friday, so everyone will be at the clubhouse at some point this weekend. I’ll get out of your hair and get these three back home.”

She gave me a hug, handed the kids a sucker, then hugged them before sending us on our way. Loading them in the car, I sent off a text to Law.

Me: Just saw Regan. Nothing to worry about. He has a cold. Stopping to get cough medicine. Will see you at home later. Love you.

Law: Good. I was worried. See you at home. Love you. Call if you need me.

Me: Don’t worry, I will.

With him reassured, I drove to the pharmacy. I was glad we could go through the drive through to get the cough medicine and Tylenol. I didn’t want to drag them inside. Dylan had fallen asleep as soon as he got in the car and it was moving. With that taken care of, I headed out of town toward home.

I was talking softly to the twins about what we’d do when we got home as we left the town limits. The compound was only five miles or so outside town, so it was a quick ride. I was so involved with the kids that I didn’t notice a car racing up on us until it was right on my bumper. I sped up a little and it did the same. Unease started to fill me. I had no idea why. Maybe because if they were in a hurry there was room to pass me since no other cars were coming. I sped up more.

Suddenly, they swerved and came up alongside me. As I glanced over to see who it was, I couldn’t help but scream. The passenger window was down and a gun was pointing out of it at me. I jerked the wheel at the same time I felt a burning sensation in my upper chest and heard the sound of a gunshot. It all seemed to happen simultaneously. As I gasped for air, my car shot off the side of the road and hit a tree, which jarred the hell out of us. The kids were screaming and crying.

I tried to calm them while attempting to see what had happened to the other car and to figure out how badly I was hurt. I knew I was shot and it hurt like hell, but I didn’t know if it was a mortal wound or not. I had to get help for the kids. I fumbled with my purse to get out my gun and my phone.

I saw the other car had stopped. The door was opening. As I scrambled to get my gun out, the door slammed shut, and the car took off. Right after that, I saw why. Coming toward us from town was another car. As it slowed down and stopped, I gripped my gun. A man and woman jumped out and came running over to us. My window was down, so they were able to talk to me. They were horrified.

The next several minutes were a haze of pain for me as they called nine-one-one. I begged them to check on my kids, who were still crying. The woman did that while the man pressed his shirt to my wound. The pain was blinding. She reassured me that the kids didn’t look hurt, just scared. She didn’t get them out of their car seats just in case they did have hidden injuries.

I was aware enough to plead with them to call Law after I knew the kids seemed okay. I handed the man my phone after swiping my thumb on it and told him to dial the number listed under Law. As he did, I heard the wail of sirens. As a police car and an ambulance came to a stop behind me, I prayed that my kids were okay and that I would be. I didn’t want to leave them or Law.

The man who’d stopped was on the phone talking animatedly. I couldn’t hear what he was saying. A police officer, a sheriff by the looks of his uniform, came to my window, along with the paramedics. They worked quickly and asked me so many questions I was getting tired and confused. I kept telling them to help my kids first, but they wouldn’t listen to me.

As they got my car door open and lifted me out to put me on the stretcher, a blinding shot of pain went through me. I gasped and darkness filled my vision. As the darkness increased, my last thought was that I didn’t want to die. I had too much to live for.

Law:

I was so relieved that it was no more than a cold that had Dylan feeling like he was. I couldn’t wait to get home and see for myself if he was feeling any better. Tonya had tried to reassure me that he was fine, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I’d just found my family and I couldn’t lose them. The vibrating of my phone took me by surprise. Taking it out of my pocket, I saw it was Tonya again.

“Hey, Valkyrie, what’s wrong? Do you need me to bring something home or is D-Man feeling worse?” I asked, although we’d only hung up about ten minutes ago. However, it wasn’t Tonya’s voice that answered. It was an unknown man. I instantly put my car in gear and started toward home. There was no reason for someone to be on her phone unless she was hurt or sick.

“Hey, is this Law?”

“Yes, this is Law. Who is this? Why do you have my woman’s phone? Where is she?”

“Listen, my name is Abel. My woman and I were on our way out of town when we saw your wife’s car being run off the road. She asked me to call you. She’s hurt, and the ambulance is here to take her to the hospital. She asked me to call you.”

My heart sped up, and I was having trouble catching my breath. I fought to stay with the conversation and not get lost in my head. “How bad is she hurt? Are the kids okay? Where exactly are you?”

“She’s bleeding a lot. I don’t know how bad it is. She’s talking. The kids look like they’re alright. We’re about three miles out of town headed east on the main road.”

“Tell her I’m on my way,” I said before hanging up. I turned on my lights and siren as I sped through town. I quickly called Smoke. He was almost always at the compound. As soon as he answered, I didn’t waste time.

“I need whoever is at the compound to head toward town. I just got a call from a man, Abel. He said that Tonya and the kids were in a wreck about two miles from the compound. Paramedics are there. I’m on my way. I need someone I know to be there until I get there.”

“Fuck, okay, let me take care of it. You try to drive safely. Meet you there,” he said before he hung up.

It didn’t take me long to get to the crash, but it felt like it took years. I barely put my car in park before bailing out and running over to her car. I saw it was a different sheriff than I recognized. He came rushing over to me. I saw that a few members of the club were there.

“Hey, we got this. It’s not your jurisdiction.”

“Motherfucker, get out of my way! That’s my woman and kids,” I snarled. He was smart and moved. As I reached the paramedics, I saw Tonya was unconscious.

“What’s wrong with her? I’m her fiancé.” I recognized one of the paramedics. He recognized me too.

“Hey, Jake, we’ve got to move. Your club is handling the kids. They’re hysterical and need to be checked out. Another squad is on its way to get them. We need to get your woman to the hospital.”
