“No, you’re not,” Aurora chuckled softly. “Opening your heart to someone isn’t a bad thing, Harper. It’s that special part of us that makes us human.”

“He’s the first guy I… no, it doesn’t matter.”

“Go on, you can tell me.”

“He’s the first guy I ever spent the night with.”

Twice.

I’d had hookups, sure, and I’d had first dates that led to one-night stands. But I’d never stayed the night or fallen asleep with a guy. Sometimes it was my decision, sometimes, it was theirs, but it always felt like a big deal. Like once the morning rolled around, and the sun came up, they would see between the cracks of my easy, breezy, I-can-do-casual-sex façade.

“You were a virgin? But I thought—”

“No, I don’t mean sex, Rory,” I tsked. “I mean, like sleeping over. Waking up together.”

And then it hit me. We hadn’t gotten to that part. Not really. Because I’d left the first time it happened, and he was gone the second time.

“Ah, I see.”

“I’m an idiot.”

“You’re not. You’re just—”

A knock at my door startled me.

“Someone’s here,” I said, clambering off my bed, half-expecting to see Natalie or one of the girls from my floor.

I didn’t expect to find Mason standing at my door for the second time in less than twenty-four hours.

“Harper?” Rory said, reminding me she was at the other end of the line.

“I need to go. I’ll call you later.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I’m not sure.”

I hung up before opening the door.

“Hey,” Mason said, looking a little sheepish. “Can I come in?”

“You want to—”

He took a step forward, right to the threshold of my door. “Invite me in, blondie.”

“I… Would you like to come in?”

His mouth twitched as I stepped aside and let him enter. “What are you doing here?” I closed the door and leaned back against it, wary and cautious.

“I didn’t like how we ended things this morning.”

“Oh.”

“Look, I know it’s none of my business, but if we’re going…” He trailed off, glancing down at the light gray carpet as he ran a hand over his head and down the back of his neck.

“If we’re going to what?” I asked, blood roaring between my ears, my heart beating wildly in my chest.

Mason looked up, staring at me with those cool, assessing eyes of his, my skin vibrating with awareness. He strode toward me, not stopping until we were almost chest-to-chest. His hand went to the door above my head, and I cracked my neck to look at him.
