“Mase—”

He curved his hand around my neck as his mouth crashed down on mine, stealing the breath from my lungs and erasing the questions on the tip of my tongue.

He tasted like mint and licorice, the clean, slightly bitter taste my new favorite flavor.

“Fuck,” he breathed, kissing me harder, shaping my mouth with his. His tongue teased mine, licking into my mouth before he trailed hot wet kisses down my jaw.

“Mason…” I twisted my fingers into his hoodie, pulling him closer.

Needing him so much closer.

He pressed me into the door, pinning me there with his hips. “Never gonna get enough of this,” he murmured, his hand splaying around my throat as he controlled the kiss.

But then he broke away, and I whimpered, trying to lean back in. A wicked smirk tugged at his mouth as he gazed down at me. “So fucking responsive.”

“Stop teasing me,” I pouted, hardly able to believe this was happening.

“We should probably talk.” He blew out a steady breath, and I wondered if he was as breathless as me.

Breathless and completely overwhelmed.

“Or we could talk after…”

“Want to go somewhere with me?”

“You want to go somewhere, now?” My brows furrowed because we’d gone from zero to sixty and back down to zero again.

“Yeah.” Mason’s expression softened, and he reached out, tucking my hair behind my ear. “What do you say, blondie? Go out with me?”

The last thing I wanted was to leave this room and face reality. Out there, too many things were against us. In here, it was safe. It was easy to pretend.

“It’ll just be the two of us,” he said as if he could hear my thoughts.

“Where do you want to go?”

“Will you trust me if I say it’s a surprise?”

God, there were so many things I wanted to say. But Mason was here, and he wanted to take me somewhere to talk after giving me one of the best kisses of my life.

How could I do the sensible thing and say no?

The answer was I couldn’t.

My heart was his the second I opened the door.

I just hoped this time he didn’t leave it in pieces.

“You’re quiet,” Mason said as we drove to wherever it was he was taking me.

I had an idea as we’d headed out of Lakeshore and taken the highway toward Rushton. But I didn’t want to voice my suspicions in case I was wrong.

“Just thinking,” I said, smiling over at him.

“Anything you want to share?”

“Did Scottie enjoy his time at the arena this morning?” I chose a safe topic.
