“I never stopped wanting to be with you, wanting what we could have together. I just needed to grow up. I needed to see who I was when I’m not in your shadow.” Although her words are spoken softly, I know that I’ll remember them until the day I die. For the first time in a long time, I go to bed with a smile on my face.

When I open my eyes the next morning, the first thing I notice is her warm body in bed with me, and the second thing I notice is that I’m painfully hard. I roll away from Margot before she wakes up and get out of bed.

After a cold shower and jerking my dick until I watch it drain with the water, I get ready to leave while Margot continues to sleep. Smiling to myself, I kneel down next to her face at the side of the bed.

“Hey. You. Wake up.” I shake her when all she does is mumble and roll over.

“Go. Away. Before I hurt you.” She pulls the blanket over her head and scoots away from me.

“I have to leave. Are you going to be okay here? I know it’s a Saturday and everything, but do you have everything you’ll need?”

“The Wi-Fi password and make some coffee before you leave.” She grumbles and flips the blanket down so that her face is visible.

She’s a hot mess; that’s for sure. Her long blond hair has escaped the ponytail she put it in. She has remnants of mascara under her eyes that she didn’t get off with her shower, making her look like she has two black eyes, but she’s beautiful. Her lips are slightly swollen, and her eyes are half-closed with sleep.

I know I want to wake up to her like this for the rest of my life. I don’t want perfect or put together. I want messy. I want Margot.

“The password is the same as it’s always been, your name and mine together. And I have a Keurig, so you can make your own coffee when you want a cup. Everything is in the cupboard above the pot. You can help yourself to anything. You know that.”

“You heading into the office?” She sits up in my bed and rubs her eyes.

“Yeah, I have to make sure I go over everything I can remember with the State Police. Since they’ll be the ones to officially investigate Dustin’s murder.”

“Okay, well, I’m going to go back to bed. I’ll see you later.” Margot rolls over, but I’m not through with her yet. “Oomph.” She can’t make another sound as I throw myself on top of her and press my lips to hers. When she opens her mouth to mine, I know in the midst of the chaos and devastation that’s surrounding us, Margot and I are getting a second chance at forever.

MARGOT

“You’re where?”Maya’s voice sounds through my phone’s speaker.

“I’m at Jake’s house. He said I could stay here instead of invading your place.” I take a drink of my coffee while pulling my feet up onto the couch and under the blanket I carried from the bedroom.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea? Jake’s determined to win you back. To make it so that you two have another chance at things.” Maya may be asking the right question, but I can hear the hope in her voice.

“I know. I’m going to give it to him. I’m going to give us a chance to get it right this time. With what happened to Dustin, I don’t want to walk away. And I don’t want that regret. I want to know. I’m tired of running.” I have to face facts. I’ve been running from Jake since the day of the accident. Running away from everything I’ve ever wanted. Because I’m afraid of losing it… Of losing him.

“Okay, well, I’m going to get the boys to Grandma’s house. Then I’m coming over. None of us should be alone right now. Plus, we can see about making some food to take to Nikki. You know my love language is food. And taking care of people.”

“Of course.”

“I’ll see you soon.” We disconnect the call, and I decide to take a shower before my friend arrives.

An hour later, I’m clean and dressed in a pair of jeans and a loose-fitting t-shirt, waiting on the porch with a cup of coffee held between my hands.

Maya pulls in, and I swear I can see her smile from across the driveway and through the windshield of her SUV.

“I know the real reason you came. Jake has a state-of-the-art kitchen and you didn’t want to have to do the dishes after.”

“I have two boys who love to eat. My house is trashed all the time. I’m not about to make it any worse. Jake can handle a little cleaning.”

Laughing, we get to work making enough food that Nikki won’t have to cook for herself for at least a month.

“Do you want to go with me to drop it off?” We’re staring at ten different Tupperware dishes and I’m silently trying to figure out how we’re going to get it all in Maya’s back seat without anything spilling.

“Sure.” I grab two and follow her out the front door.

When we’re done loading the food into Maya’s SUV and are on the road, I know it’s time to talk about what’s going on with me and Jake.
