He approached her, and they nuzzled. Two wild beasts rubbing each other’s faces, lost in the solace of a love neither of them could have anticipated.

Franco felt the most at ease, with a certainty pulsing through his very veins.

Cornel approached, still in his tiger form. He calmly warned them the police were coming and that they should decide on a plan of action.

They all shifted at the same time, getting stark naked, covered in blood and scratches that would heal quickly. The worst injury that had been inflicted was Franco’s. Terror had successfully torn off a layer of skin and left it flapping like a sail.

“Baby!”

Violet embraced him as the lights from the sirens washed over them. The pit team hadn’t fled completely. They had explained the situation to the police while Felix and Samantha retrieved clothing to keep their reputation clean.

Well, for the most part.

Terror, Koss, and the third wolf shifter were all arrested for attempted murder and various other charges. They sat together in the garage with a blanket wrapped around them, Violet curled in Franco’s arms. They made their statements, and paramedics saw to Franco’s shoulder injury.

Violet clung to Franco for the rest of the night, always holding his hand or tucking an arm over his chest. He sensed sadness in her as well as utter exhaustion.

The venue had been emptied so the fight could be investigated. But Franco wasn’t worried. They had Violet’s recording as well as around thirty other witnesses.

Dusk had fallen by the time they were allowed to go back to their hotels. The award ceremony would take place the next day at the winner’s circle instead. Before Franco and Violet left the garage, she tugged at his hand.

He turned to her, blinking slowly.

She looked terrified.

“What is it?” he asked, scowling.

“Did you mean it?”

Franco’s mind was slow as molasses. His shoulder pain had moved into his skull to form a splitting headache. He had to think for a second to understand what she referred to. When he realized it, he went to her, taking her by the waist in the loose shorts the team had given her.

“You mean about loving you?”

She bit her lip, but not in arousal. She was scared. He wanted to ease that fear.

“You saw me out there. I wanted revenge. I need to make sure your idea of me wasn’t … tainted.”

Franco chuckled, then took her face into his hands. Her tired eyes called to him like sirens.

They kissed in the garage for one of the last times within Eden Speedway.

TWENTY-ONE

VIOLET

Despite her shower and fresh clothes, Violet’s mind continued reeling from the fight with Terror and the others.

“I understand why they did it,” she said to Franco as they walked toward the track for one last event for the race weekend. “That’s no excuse, mind you, but I get it. Greed is powerful. It can make you do terrible things.”

“That it can,” Franco said. “But it’s over now. Terror and Koss won’t be causing problems for a very long time.”

Violet nodded in agreement and pushed further thoughts of the matter aside.

“Now, my love, it’s time to head to the winner’s tent,” Franco said while cupping her chin in his hand. He leaned in and planted a warm kiss on her lips. She parted them and greeted him with her tongue.

“Hmm,” she muttered. “I could get used to kisses like that,” she whispered.

Franco smiled. “That you shall.” As they stepped into the rear of the massive tent, he slid off the sponsor-branded jacket he wore everywhere and wrapped an arm around her. Violet couldn’t help noticing the apparent wince as he lifted his shoulder.
