“Yes.”

“He’s always loved me.”

“Yes.”

My gaze shot to his. “You knew?”

“Of course. That makes you mad?”

“Y-yeah.”

“Why?”

“Do you know how we broke up?”

“No.”

I told him.

“Okay, well, that was a stupid, dumbass move on his part.”

“Yeah. He thought it was for the best, though.”

“Of course he did. Stupid dumbass.”

I almost smiled at that.

“He’s wild but noble. It’s a lousy combination and you were caught in the line of fire.”

“Yeah.”

“What exactly about this situation makes you angry?”

“That it was all for nothing.”

“What was?”

“All this time, thinking he didn’t love me for ten years. Everything I had to do to get over him.”

“It was easier when you thought he didn’t love you?”

“Yeah. Why did he have to wait ten years to tell me?”

A pause. “But Emma, when could he have told you before now?”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“In the last ten years, when did he have the chance to tell you? You were never here.” He scrubbed his hand over his face. “Look, I’m not going to say that you shouldn’t have done what you did back then, leaving town and all. Jake treated you terribly.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but Gabe held up his hand to stop me, smiling gently. “Even for what I am sure seemed to him to be the best reasons, he owed you more than what you got from him. I’ll be the first to admit that. Well, the second actually, behind Jake. I just want to say one thing, and I hope it helps you.”

“Okay.” My voice was slow, hesitant.

“If, as you say, you’re the most upset by ten years passing without Jake sharing his feelings with you, it’s not like opportunities for him to do that were thick on the ground. And that wasn’t exactly his fault.”

Yes. Because I ran. And ran. And ran. It was only when I was forced to come back and stay that we even had a chance at working through what happened between us. Fuck. “You’re right.”

He smiled again. “So now it’s up to you what you do about it.”
