Unsure, Eagle frowns and mumbles, “But her gravestone is right here in McMurdo Valley.”

“Yes, but you must share that one with your sisters, and it’s right next to Lloyd’s grave now. This way, you’ll have a private memorial for Jillian.”

Eagle’s smile is my reward for treating his heart with care. We design the memorials for those we lost.

However, I worry our sensitive kids will be confused about the children I lost or the grandmother they’ll never meet. Instead, they’re able to learn how life ends, but memories live on.

“We talk about Owen, Inessa, and Jillian so they won’t be forgotten,” I tell Rhett and Clementine while we leave flowers on the memorials. “You can keep them alive in your heart.”

For so many years, I hid from my pain by locking away beautiful memories. Forgetting seemed easier than suffering over what I lost.

Fortunately, Eagle awoke a part of my heart. We created a child who needed me completely present. I couldn’t hide anymore if I wanted to love Eagle and our children in the way they deserved. Repairing what grief shattered wasn’t easy, but the reward was more than worth it.

Often while riding on the back of Eagle’s motorcycle, I’ll recall the first day I saw him. Up until then, I assumed the Steel Berserkers Motorcycle Club was a threat.

Instead, the club and a very handsome member flipped my life upside down, pulling me out of the darkness and making me whole again.
