“You don’t need to look like that.” Rob chuckled. “He just mentioned how much you like to swim.”

She exhaled. “I don’t mind swimming.”

“Something else we have in common.”

“Something else?”

“We both like to swim and we both have excellent taste in the opposite sex.”

Oh, puh-leeze. She struggled not to roll her eyes.

“Did I ever tell you about my champion swimming days?”

Sarah smiled sweetly. “No. But I’m sure you’re about to.”

He laughed. “You’re real funny. I like a pretty woman who makes me laugh.”

Sarah sipped her water and glanced around the resort restaurant for a clock. She slowly chewed the last carefully carved vegetable decoration as Rob kept on with yet another long story that invariably showcased himself as the hero. She attempted to look interested, but her thoughts kept drifting. She hadn’t had a first date in such a long time. Stephen had been her first real boyfriend, and she’d never really gone out with anyone else.

She clutched the ring on her right hand as Rob laughed loudly again.God, is this what it’s going to be now? A whole lot of hurt and confusion and misunderstandings? How many Mr. Wrongs will there be until I finally meet Mr. Right?

“So, Sarah, do you want dessert?”

She looked up guiltily into Rob’s hopeful face and shook her head no. All she wanted was to go home and read a good book.

Dan had stayedup waiting for the turn of headlights in the drive, trying to watch some lame action movie with Jason, but he couldn’t stay focused on the ludicrous stunts, wondering all the while how the date was going. He felt edgy. Anxious, even. When Rob’s sleek and shiny silver Porsche pulled in earlier than expected, the knots inside eased.

Rob moved through the door. Dan nodded, keeping his gaze on the big screen.

Jason glanced up from the movie. “How was it?”

“Good. We had fun. Food was great.”

As Rob went on to describe tonight’s five-star resort restaurant with water views, the food, and the dinner service, Dan fought the jealousy that rode hot and high.

“So, will you go again?” God bless Jason for asking all the right questions.

“Not sure. She didn’t say too much.”

Dan blinked. Since when did Sarah not have much to say?

Rob yawned. “Yeah, she was a bit tired or something at the end, and we didn’t set another time.” Rob made his excuses and headed upstairs.

Dan tried to ignore Jason’s satirical expression and slight chuckle and make it look like he actually cared about the final scenes of the film. An ember of hope flickered in his heart. Maybe she wasn’t as enamored as he’d believed.

The next dayDan made his way next door. Ange and John were out the front about to get in the car. “Hey, Ange, John. Is Sarah around?”

“She’s out the back in the hammock. It seems to be her favorite place these days.”

“Thanks.” He made his way round the back, where he could see Sarah slowly swinging, looking up at the pine trees, lost in thought.

“Hey, stranger.”

She turned to look at him, unsmiling. “Hi.”

“I came to ask if you wanted to come for a boat trip today. The day’s perfect. Fish will be biting.”
