“Tally,” I whisper. “My queen. Are you alright?”

Her blond, tangled head nods and she hiccups out a sob as she throws her sweet curves onto me, sobbing. “You’re the one that got shot stopping that man from shooting me.”

She sits up and slaps me slightly on the chest before she falls back over my chest, still sobbing quietly. “Don’t you ever do that to me again!”

“Do what?” I whisper hoarsely.

“Throw yourself in front of a bullet! Are you crazy? You could have been killed if that guy was a better shot.”

I snort. “Yeah. I know what I’m doing. And there’s no way in hell I was letting that guy shoot you.”

“So shoot him,” she says, her little chin firming and her full mouth working.

My lips twitch as I study the little terror telling me flat out just to kill a man.

“I can’t believe you said that. You’re pretty bloodthirsty today, dove.”

“What do you expect me to say! You got shot! Because of me.”

“No!” I jerk up. “It was not because of you. It was because of the man shooting at you.”

“If I hadn’t been there, you wouldn’t have gotten shot.” Her eyes are so pained that it hurts me physically.

“No, dove. If they hadn’t broken into my house, I wouldn’t have gotten shot. I would gladly trade my life every damn day to save you. You will never get me to agree not to protect you with every bit of me including my body. You are my heart. If anything happened to you, that would be the end of me. I would crawl into that damn grave with you. I couldn’t do anything else.”

“That doesn’t make me happy.”

“Well, I don’t like that it upsets you but it’s too bad because I cannot promise not to do the same thing if I’m in the same situation again.”

“I swear if you do…” she bristles like a little kitten.

“You can smack me all you want. Can even punch me in the face. Won’t change a thing.”

The sorrow in her pretty blue eyes tugs at my heart but she is my heart. I cannot bear to lose her.

Her hand taps at my wrist and I look up at her, surprised to see her worry. “Hey, I’m gonna be fine. I’ll be up in no time driving you crazy, dove.”

She shakes her head. “Petal never came back with that other man. Where is she? Where is he?”

I hate to add to her worry but I can’t tell her the truth. I don’t really know.

“I don’t know for sure but I think that she and Victor got away. I’m sure he’ll take care of her.”

She chews her full lower lip and nods her head absently. I reach out a hand to touch her golden curls, twisting one of them around my finger and watching it spring back.

“I trust Victor implicitly. As my cousin, he’s completely loyal to me and he wants to find out who killed my father. He’ll be back with her and he’ll make sure that we get our hands on that man. Make him pay.”

My jaw firms. “Blood was spilled from our side. Now it’s their turn.”

“Promise me that you won’t be so reckless.”

“Stay where I told you to and I won’t have to be…” I shoot back at her.

“Jesus! You are one stubborn bastard.”

“And you love it.”

“Lucky for you.”
