“Soft, sweet and innocent. Gentle and easily hurt. Those all seem to fit you, Tally.”

I nod my head. He’s not wrong. I probably do fit in all of those categories.

“I won’t disagree with you.”

“So are you going to run now that you know that the big, bad wolf is knocking at your door, dove?”

I scoff. “No. Mainly because you’re going to lose interest in me before I ever need to worry about any of that. I won’t be involved in your life at that point so there’s nothing for me to worry about.”

His supercilious grin rubs me the wrong way and I feel myself bristle angrily.

“I don’t change my mind once I make it up. I picked you out of this crowd, dove. I knew as soon as I saw you that you belonged to me. I can see our future.” He leans closer and his big, tanned hand wraps around my chin, tugging me closer to him until I’m just a breath away from his full, smirking lips. “I’m going to marry you, fuck you as much as possible and get you all beautifully rounded with my babies as soon as I can.”

My breath puffs out in raspy pants. “That’s pretty specific. How do you know that?”

A slow smile curls his lips and he chuckles. It’s not a funny laugh. Oh no. It’s dark and dangerous and chills dart along my skin.

“Would you believe me if I told you that I’m a little psychic, dove?”

Would I believe that? It’s no weirder than any other part of this whole scenario.

Loud voices boom over the music and my forehead scrunches as I search for the source of the disturbance.

Two big men rush over to Xavier and try to drag him away from me but he shakes his head and hollers something at one of them. The big man turns his golden-brown eyes on me and nods shortly.

Before I can ask what’s going on, I’m thrown across a huge, muscular shoulder and hanging down his back. His suit is just as perfectly-tailored as Xavier’s but I don’t feel the same the skittering nerves under my skin where he touches me.

All three of the men rush at a door and I scream and beat on the broad back when I see Petal standing in the middle of a huge crowd of screaming people, her eyes wide, face white.

“Petal! Petal!”I scream and beat at the large back, kicking my legs wildly, feeling a surge of satisfaction when I hear a loud, pained grunt. His grip loosens and I feel myself sliding. I kick myself free, landing with a grunt and a whimper of pain. The guy’s huge and I dropped a fair piece. I get to my feet, limping, slipping off my high heels and darting back towards where I last saw Petal.

“Dammit, get her!” I hear Xavier’s deep voice hollering at the men with him.

I scramble wildly between people running in the opposite direction, not sure what’s going on but the air is hot, the dance floor dark and there are screams and moans near me.

I finally reach Petal and grab her hands. “Hey, we’ve got to get out of here!” I scream into her frozen face.

“I-I…”. She can’t seem to finish the sentence and then I hear a rat-tat-tat sound that I know from watching movies.

“Oh shit! Someone’s shooting!” I grab her hands and pull desperately at her. “Petal! We’ve got to go! Come on!” I’m practically sobbing with the effort to move her. “Please, come on!”

Someone falls to the ground two people over from me and the girl next to him shrieks and falls to her knees, sobbing hysterically as dark red blooms on the front of his white shirt.

“Petal, dammit!” I pull back my hand and slap her soundly, wincing as her head snaps back. “Snap out of it. We’ve got to go.”

We start running and she hops on one foot until she manages to pull off her sandals as well. We’re slamming into bodies and it seems like the gunfire is following us. Every time we slow down or stop, searching for a way out, a shot rings out close to us.

“Come with me, dammit! What the hell were you thinking?” Xavier’s rough, angry voice calls out as he drags me to him and then tosses me over his shoulder.

“No! Petal! I need to get Petal out!” Xavier nods his dark head and the huge man who grabbed me the first time grabs her and tosses her over his shoulder. Petal’s so far gone she doesn’t even react.

The huge guy nods to where two more huge goons are guarding a door to the back and both men take off, jerking guns out of their jackets and firing shots at shadowy men that I can’t see. I hope to god they’re bad guys because I can’t stand the thought that both men are shooting totally innocent men and women.

We burst through the door and into a dark hallway. There’s an open door at the end of it and milky light shows where we’re going.

They race for it and I pray that we’re not being dragged into the fire instead of safety.
