Another man comes in with what I have to assume is the plain-clothes detective and they start asking questions.

No. I didn’t know the Campano’s before this. No, I don’t know any Vitrillo’s. I have never been in touch with the mafia. I work in a library. Petal answers all of the same questions with the elementary school.

“What were you doing there last night?”

I glare at the two of them, having had enough of this shit. “I don’t think that if two girls want to go out, it’s a crime.”

“Depends what you’re going out to do.” The asshole shoots back.

“It was my birthday. We went out to celebrate.”

“Perfect timing,” the one sneers.

I stand up. “That’s it. I’m not sure what the hell is the matter with you guys, but we came here to tell you we saw the guy…or she saw the guy and you haven’t even asked about that. You’ve been too busy questioning our motives for going out to a club and where we work. We’re not under arrest so as far as I’m concerned, we’re done here.”

Neither man makes a move to stop us and I stare at them, confused. “Fine. Thank you for your time, gentlemen.”

I strut out the door ahead of Petal, my back rigid and anger visible in every tense line of my body.

We get to the lobby of the building and it feels like everyone is staring at us. I pull Petal closer and whisper in her ear. “I think this was a mistake. And I’m not sure who we can trust anymore. Any one of these guys could be working for the Vitrillo’s. We need to regroup and figure out what the hell to do because I don’t think the police are going to be any help at all.”

Petal nods and her eyes dart back and forth. We step outside the building together and within seconds, a limo pulls up alongside us smoothly and a man jumps out of the opposite side. Before we can even scream, we’re shoved into the back of the limo and I stiffen when I see Xavier’s dark features across from me, smiling slightly.

“Hello, my queen. I hear you’ve had an exciting morning.”

CHAPTER6

Xavier

The look on her pretty face is actually priceless. “I hear that you’ve had an interesting morning.”

Her rosy mouth drops open and once again, I have to fight my baser urges. My cock aches with the need to push inside her wet, hot mouth. Or pussy. Or really every damn part of her body.

“How did you find me, Xavier?”

“I told you one of my men was watching your place. He saw you leave in a rush in an Uber.” I turn and stare her down. “Which is not safe, by the way. I would have been happy to take you anywhere you wanted to go if you had only called me.”

“I did not have your number.”

“That’s true. I will be more careful next time and make sure that you have everything you need. Including any access to me that you would need.”

“That’s not necessary. The Uber driver was totally pleasant and courteous.”

“But he could have been something other than that and you wouldn’t have known it until it was too late.”

“But he wasn’t. And it went fine.”

“But it might have ended differently. You don’t know.”

She rolls her sapphire blue eyes. “Jesus. You’re a stubborn ass, Xavier.”

Victor snickers behind me and I whirl to glare at him, unsurprised when his face is perfectly smooth, not even a glimmer of a laugh.

“You really annoy me with that shit.”

He coughs out a “dick” and I glare at him harder.

“Anyway, dove. Why don’t you tell me what you were trying to tell those police officers who wouldn’t listen.”
