And nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. It was a series of things that I saw one at a time in rapid succession, but my mind had a hard time connecting them.

First, I noticed Wesley’s car. Our former phantom zone where we could say anything.

Then I saw that Wesley was there, too. Sitting on the hood of it, just casually.

This was all a trick! He and Mila had been working together to trick me into getting face to face with Wesley.

But I pushed that thought aside when I realized where we were. We were right in front of the Dyer house.

Of course he would plan it that way. Force us to meet up again at the place where this all began.

“Oh my God,” I said to Mila. “I look like shit right now. How could you do this to me?”

I pushed her. Pretty hard. Harder than I should have, probably.

“It was my idea,” Wesley said. “Leave her out of this.”

“Don’t look at me,” I said, covering my face. My hair was wild and all over the place, I was covered in sweat, and I think I was on the third day since my last shower. “Stay where you are. Don’t come any closer.”

“Okay,” he said, still not moving from the hood of his car. “But you’re still beautiful, you know that?”

“Yeah, and you’re a liar,” I said, but I couldn’t help but smile. It really did sound like he meant it.

“Look,” he said. “I just wanted to give you something. Two somethings.” He raised both his hands, which were in fists, presumably holding something. “Which do you want first?”

“I don’t want to play games, Wesley,” I said. He had my curiosity piqued, though.

“No games. Left or right.”

I sighed. “Left.”

“My left or your left?”

“Mine.” I pointed to his right hand, which was on my left.

In response, Wesley dropped to one knee and opened up his palm, revealing a small velvet box.

“God dammit,” I said. Of course that’s what it was. And now, in addition to the sweat covering my body, I had tears filling my eyes. “You had to do that, didn’t you?”

“Do what?” he asked.

“You had to do that. You had to drag me out here and take me by surprise when my mind is all fuzzy and ask me a question I don’t even know how to answer.”

“I haven’t asked you anything yet,” he said.

I gestured towards him with my hand in a rolling motion. “Go ahead. Go do what you’re going to do.”

He cleared his throat. “I know this has all been unconventional and fast, so I can understand why you might be confused and uncertain, but I wanted to make sure you know that I am certain. You’re the most remarkable woman I’ve ever met. You’re beautiful and smart and funny and make me happier than I deserve. I don’t know what you’d say, but I’d be stupid not to ask. Sloane, will you marry me?”

He popped the box open and revealed a beautiful ring.

I hiccupped. “God dammit!” I said again.

The ring wasn’t huge or gaudy, but there was definitely a diamond in there and it would look so good on my finger.

But I couldn’t.

I held my breath for a second.
