Spencer: Emergency Call Doc

Ibolted upright. “I’m sorry. I have to take this. There’s an emergency call at the clinic.”

Declan squeezed my hand. “Go. We’ll meet you afterward. Let us know if we can help in any way.”

My heart skipped. They were always so thoughtful. I grabbed my leggings out from under the table and rushed to my temporary office. I pulled them on and plopped into the chair, powering up my computer.

Once I was up and running, I dialed Spencer. His face popped up on the screen.

“What do we have?” I asked, skipping over the formalities.

“Mrs. Perkins’ dog slipped on the porch and cut his leg.”

“Bring me into the exam room. Let’s get a look at it.”

Spencer walked the laptop into the room, and we explained to Mrs. Perkins that Spencer would be my hands today. I walked Spencer through giving the dog a sedative and cleaning out the wound. Thankfully, it wasn’t bad enough to need stitches, but Spencer had done them with me in the past, so I wouldn’t have been worried if he needed to do them now.

He swabbed the cut with antiseptic and gave the dog a shot of antibiotics and a painkiller. Once the leg was bandaged up, Spencer went over all the home care instructions and scheduled her with a wound check appointment in a few days.

My chest swelled with pride.

Spencer did an amazing job. He had grown so much since I first started working with him. He had the confidence and knowledge to take on this challenge. It made me feel more comfortable knowing the clinic was in capable hands while I was away.

“I’ll hang out here for a few more hours if anyone needs anything. And I’ll take inventory so we can place a supply order when you get back.”

“Thanks, Spencer.” I smiled. “Check back in with me before you leave.”

“You got it. Stay safe out there.”

“You too. Oh, and Spencer?”

“Yeah.”

“You did fantastic. Nice work on the patient.”

The last I saw was a grin spread across his face before the screen went blank.

THOMAS

“Do you think breakfast was too much?” I asked Declan as we cleared the dishes from breakfast and sorted out the kitchen. Mrs. Roberts would have our heads if we left a mess.

“Honestly, I don’t know. One minute she seemed like she was enjoying the conversation and the next, she goes silent. Did you hear her comment about us finding another woman? We clearly aren’t doing a good enough job of showing her we want her.” Declan’s frown had me worried. My brother rarely frowned.

“Let’s just take it one day at a time. You said that yourself. This is a trial. We can’t get our hopes up in case it doesn’t work out.”

“Who are we fucking kidding, Thomas? We’ve both fallen hard and fast for her, and you know it.”

I couldn’t deny it, but I wouldn’t admit it out loud just yet.

We gathered Alex’s winter clothes around the house, waiting for her to finish her call. I hoped it wasn’t too bad. I knew it killed her to not be there to help. I could only imagine how she would feel if something bad happened and she could’ve fixed it if she wasn’t stuck here.

An hour later, Alex strolled into my office, looking better than I had expected. I pushed from my desk to get up, but Alex glided over and sat down on my lap. Wrapping my arms around her, I couldn’t help but breathe her in. She smelled like my apple shampoo and mint body wash. My dick hardened, knowing my woman smelled like me.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes. A dog cut his leg, but Spencer handled it.” She sighed and leaned her head on my shoulder.

“That’s good news. Not the hurt dog part, but that you can trust Spencer to get the job done.” I kissed her forehead. “Do you need to stay near your computer?”
