I shook my head. Trust him to be overly dramatic about it.

“It’s not a relationship, Marcus.”

“Next thing you know, you’re popping babies.”

The look on my face must have given me away, even though I didn’t say anything.

“Too soon?” Marcus asked.

I didn’t exactly know how to answer that. I definitely knew that Katrina was different and I asking her out was also me going all in for her. She wanted to get married and wake up next to her husband while she cooked for him and her children. Would I be able to completely give her that? Was I capable of doing that?

“You zoned out.” Marcus brought me out of my thoughts as I sighed. “A Penny for your thoughts?” He smiled.

“I just don’t want to hurt her, Marcus.” I took a sip of my whiskey. Thanks to the good night’s sleep I had with Katrina, my shoulders hurt less. “She wants so much and I like that she is opinionated. I like that she’s not afraid to be honest. I like that she knows her worth and guns for nothing less than that. But deep down within me, I keep wondering if I can actually provide her with all these things, you know?”

“In theory, its way easier, but practically thinking about it is where reality hits. Look, I’ve been here man, and one thing I’ve come to realize with everything that’s happened between Deborah and me, is that loving someone is a choice.” He chuckled. “I love Deborah. Heck, I will probably die loving her but at the time when she needed me to make that choice of being with her and standing by her, I couldn’t come through for her. And loving someone is not a choice you make once. You have to keep doing it, bro. You have to constantly choose that love every day if you can.”

“What do you suggest I do? I mean, it’s not like you were my first choice for this, but I’ll make do with what I have.”

“Who else do you know with marriage experience?” he asked me.

“Penelope, for one. I think she would be perfect.”

“But you’re too high up on your horse to go to her for relationship advice and that’s where I come in. You’re pretty much on the right track. You and Kat have chosen each other. All that’s left is to keep doing that.” He smiled.

“How?” I asked.

“You’ll know when it’s time for you to choose. And in that moment, you’ll choose Kat without asking any questions.”

I pondered on that for a second.

“I met Deborah a few nights ago,” I stated.

“What did you two talk about?”

“Have you finally settled on what you’ll do for her birthday? The grand gesture?” I asked.

“Man, I’ve got nothing. Who knew it would be this difficult to perform a grand gesture. I’m completely clueless. I really was a terrible husband.”

“What if I get you some help?”

“Really? I would really appreciate that, man, but how?”

“Let’s just say I know a woman who’s a sucker for romance and happily ever after.” I grinned

“Two days?!And you’re just telling me now?!” Katrina yelled as she paced around my office.

Just like I promised Marcus, I had found help. Katrina.

“I thought he had it under control. I would have come to you sooner if I knew he was completely clueless on how to surprise his own wife.” I clicked send on the email I had been typing on my desktop before I shifted my gaze to Katrina.

She was touching a loose strand of her red hair as she paced my office.

“Could you stop doing that? It’s giving me a headache.”

Katrina turned to face me with a sharp glare and I laughed.
