“Nothing too serious. It’s just stress and she hasn’t had anything to eat all day. So she got dizzy and lost consciousness.” He paused. “I’ve placed her on some supplements. As soon as she regains consciousness, please ensure that she gets something to eat,” he said as I nodded.

“Thank you very much, Doctor,” I said.

“I’ll take my leave then. Please give me a call when she wakes up and I will be sure to come back and check her.” He smiled.

“Daddy, can you stay with Kat? I’ll see Dr. Pete out.” Lily smiled as I nodded.

As soon as Lily and the doctor were out of the room, I walked over to Kat and touched her face. What could be disturbing her and why was she being so hard on herself? How could she have not had anything to eat all day?

Marcus was right, I needed to have a conversation with her about this, but I could only do that after she was well rested and had properly eaten.

Footsteps alerted me and I knew Lily was coming back up. I withdrew myself from Kat and walked to the other side of the room.

“Hey, dad.” Lily smiled.

“Lily, I need you to explain to me what exactly happened,” I said.

Lily was quiet for a bit, and I could see that she was having an inner debate with herself. She knew exactly what was happening, but she didn’t know whether to tell me or not.

“Lily, Kat works for me as my personal assistant and she is your best friend. That practically makes her family. If there is something wrong with her and you know what’s happening, I don’t think you should keep it from me,” I said.

“Can we talk outside, daddy?” she asked, and I nodded. We both walked out of the room as we headed downstairs.

When we arrived at the living room, Lily smiled at me.

“I need you to keep an open mind. I know Kat is going to cut my head off when she finds out I told you this because it’s certainly not my place, but I really need him to be taught a lesson.”

When she said him, I had to restrain myself from asking her further questions. What about him? Kat and I had never spoken about a man. Heck, I didn’t even think she talked to any other man besides me.

“I’m not going to tell you everything, but just the important parts,” she said.

“That’s fine by me.” I took off my jacket and rolled my sleeves up as Lily took deep breaths.

“Say something,Daddy. You promised me you were going to keep an open mind about this,” Lily said.

I was keeping an open mind and that’s exactly why I hadn’t walked out of this house and headed straight for Darius. I was keeping an open mind and that’s why I wasn’t going to act on just Lily telling me. I would wait for Kat to regain consciousness and hear her side of the story before deciding whether or not to break Darius.

Why would she keep this from me?

“She didn’t want to tell you because Kat doesn’t like to burden anybody. When she was out of a job she never ever mentioned me talking to her for you. I did all of that on my own,” Lily said.

I knew exactly the kind of person Katrina was and I admired her for that, but she should have told me.

“When this whole thing with Darius blows over, there’s something I need to talk to you about,” I said to Lily.

She eyed me skeptically.

“Alright, dad, but before then I would like to suggest that Kat lives with us until all of this blows over. I’m not fine with her staying all alone at her apartment,” Lily said.

Living in the same house with my daughter and my girlfriend? My girlfriend was also my daughter’s best friend. Oh, good lord, I needed to have a drink with Marcus desperately. My life was fast becoming a sitcom.

“Yes, definitely she can stay,” I stated.

“Thank you, dad I can leave you with her right? Kat and I aren’t exactly the same size, so I want to go to the mall and grab a few things for her.” Lily smiled.

“I can stay here with her,” I said.
