“I can see the kindness that is in your heart reflected in your eyes. It’s there right now, shining down on me like the warmth of the sun after a cold rain.”Reaching out, she took hold of my hand and gave it a barely there squeeze.“I have never met a better person than you, Jack. And if other people can’t see that, or refuse to see it, then that’s their loss.More sunshine for me.”

I turned her hand over in mine, stroking my thumb over her palm. She had no idea, not one iota, that what she saw in me was for her and her only.Something about her brought out a part of me that had lain dormant my entire life, only awoken by her.

“Do you want me to help you?”I offered after a moment of comfortable silence.“I promise not to look.”

“You don’t mind?”she mumbled, pink filling her face once again.

“When it comes to you?Never.”

“O-okay.”

I grabbed the first pair of panties I touched from the small pile and removed her foot from the sling before helping slide the underwear up her legs.Once they were at her calves, I grabbed a pair of the bulky sweats and carefully fixed them over her cast before helping her put her other foot through the leg hole.It was impossible to miss the bruises that were still dark from where those bastards had pried her legs apart.

Jaw clenched, I pulled the sweats and her panties up to her knees before helping her stand. She leaned into me, keeping pressure off the cast on her foot while I kept my eyes averted and pulled everything over her bottom.

But just because I couldn’t see her, didn’t mean I was immune to the feel of her skin beneath my fingertips as I touched her.Fuck, she was soft everywhere.

Nishia leaned back from me enough to adjust herself.“Thank you,” she said with a sigh.“These feel better against my skin than the scratchy hospital gowns.”

“Then I’ll help you put on a different top,” I offered.“If you’re comfortable with that.”

“Umm, yeah, sure.I mean, I have a bra on now, so it’s not like you’ll see…” Her voice faded, and she ducked her head before pointing at one of the tops River left behind.“That one has long sleeves, so I should stay warm.”

“You’re cold?”I asked to distract myself as I helped her take off both hospital gowns.

“It’s just a little chilly in here.”

“I’ll adjust the thermostat as soon as you’re back in bed,” I promised.

The bra River had helped her into was like a mixture of a camisole and a sports bra.The straps were wider than a normal bra and gave her tits support without squishing them against her chest. It was a pretty pink color, but that was all I allowed myself to notice about it before helping her slip the long-sleeved pajama top over her head.Once it was pulled down over her ass, I gently lifted her hair free and then helped her back into bed, making sure her foot was elevated in a comfortable position once again.

“You’ll probably be able to leave in a few more days,” I told her as I turned on the heat.

“Oh… Okay…”

Walking back to her bedside, I frowned down at her, but she was playing with the loose threads of her blanket.Bending, I grasped her chin as carefully as possible so I could lift her head to see her eyes.“You don’t want to leave?I figured you would be tired of these four walls by now.And then we can get you an appointment for new glasses.”

“No one wants to stay in the hospital,” she muttered.“I’m just nervous about what happens next.”

“You’ll come back to Sanctuary,” I reminded her.“My mom explained it to you, honey. You’ll have your own little apartment in the big house. We’ll put you on the first floor, so you won’t have to worry about the stairs. The staff is already making adjustments to everything to accommodate your needs.”

“Yeah,” she whispered, lowering her lashes.

“We have a full medical staff who will check on your progress daily, and you’ll meet the other women who live at Sanctuary. We all think it will do you some good to join in on the group therapy sessions, as well as having one-on-one time with our psychologist.”I was rambling, trying to reassure her that she was going to be fine once she left the hospital.Better than fine, because there was more we could do for her at Sanctuary. But nothing I said seemed to reassure her.

Crouching down, I took her hand again.“Listen, there’s nothing to be scared of.I’ll be right there if you need anything.”

Her brows rose in surprise.“You’ll be…there?”

“I live in the big house. My apartment is in the basement.”

“I didn’t know that,” she said quietly, but some of the tension had left her.“So, you’ll be close?”

“Just a floor below you.”

“Your apartment is big?It takes up the entire basement?”

I shook my head.“Nah.It’s a lot like the other apartments in the big house.I have a bedroom, bathroom, and a little sitting area.Just enough room for me to sleep, shower, and crash if I need to decompress. The kitchen is on the main floor and communal, but don’t worry about fixing your own meals. You are welcome to anything in the fridge, but there’s a cook who comes in and makes breakfast and dinner for everyone on the grounds.”
