“Elias, hi.It’s a typical Monday.”She gave a breathy giggle that didn’t suit her at all.It was a mixture of flirty and shy, and from the way she was dressed and looking at Elias like she was going to suck the life right out of him, she didn’t appear the least bit shy.“How was your weekend?”

I briefly glanced at them while I was checking on the next available day for a new client meeting, and I saw something flash across Elias’s face.“It was interesting, let’s just say that.”He pulled his hand from hers.“Let’s talk in the conference room.Samara will be here soon, and we can finalize the last few details before we set up a date to break ground.”

“Perfect.”

I nearly rolled my eyes at the purr in her voice but restrained myself as I focused on work.I didn’t know why she annoyed me, but just the sound of her voice made me grit my teeth.

As they passed my desk, Elias paused.“Tell Sammy to join us as soon as she gets here.”

“Okay.”

His blue eyes darkened.“Like, as soon as she walks through the door.”

Pulling the phone away from my mouth, I assured him I would.“All right, Elias.I will.”

“Don’t let her go to her office.Just tell her to come straight into the conference room.”

My brows shot up at his insistence. He was always so confident, but right then, he looked uneasy.“I heard you the first time.I’ll give her the message.”

“Right,” he muttered, giving Lynn a tight smile.“Shall we?”

“Yes, please.”

I couldn’t help rolling my eyes as I watched them walk down the hall.Elias kept at least eighteen inches between them, moving away whenever the woman would drift closer.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one annoyed with the blonde.

Ten minutes later, after I took another three calls, Samara walked through the front door. She had a tote bag with tubes containing blueprints and sketches tossed over one shoulder and a coffee in each hand. Her smile could have easily lit the entire building on a rainy day.Like with Elias, I was used to seeing her dressed casually. For the office, she wore a knee-length black pencil skirt and silky black top that dipped ever so subtly across her chest. It was sexy, yet classy.

“Happy first day!”she greeted, setting one of the cups on the desk.“I hope you like white chocolate mocha.Wasn’t sure what you prefer, but I don’t know another woman who doesn’t like chocolate.”

“Thank you.”Picking up the cup, I took a sip.“This is perfect. You’re the best.”

“Just a little something to hopefully make you feel welcome. If it means you don’t leave us, I’ll bring you goodies every morning.Jos spent an entire day figuring out what the last temp had screwed up.Clueless idiot.I really want you to stick around. So, if there’s anything you need, or if I can help in any way, just let me know.”She pulled her cell out of her bag.“Ugh, sorry, my mom is already blowing up my phone. It’s like she expects me to be up to no good.”

“Elias is in the conference room,” I told her before she could answer.“He asked me to tell you to join him and your client as soon as you got here.”

Her head jerked in the direction Elias and Lynn had disappeared, as if she could see through the walls.“She’s here already?”

“She arrived about ten or fifteen minutes ago.”

Something flickered in her eyes before her bright smile returned.“Well, I guess I should hurry.Don’t want to get fired before I complete my internship.”She sent the caller to voice mail and tossed her phone into her bag.“Thanks, Nishia.”

“I should be thanking you. This coffee was definitely needed since I already finished what I brought from home.”

The phone kept me busy for the next hour.At one point, Lynn left, but I wasn’t sure exactly why.She didn’t look happy as she stomped out the door, and a few minutes later, I thought I heard raised voices in the conference room. But I wasn’t certain because the newest caller distracted me with how loud the background noise was on their end.

“Nishia, I’m so sorry I didn’t get these out to you sooner,” Jos Reid apologized as she walked toward me from her office, a small stack of papers in hand.“It’s been a crazy morning.”

“Tell me about it,” I laughed.“I’ve already talked to more people today than I did while waiting tables back in New York.I thought Elias was exaggerating and just trying to give me a job because he felt sorry for me.”

“No way. We’re thankful to have you. With Samara’s talent, we have even more clients begging for attention.I’m trying to convince her to come back full time once she graduates. Not sure if I’ll be able to, but I can dream.”Smiling, she placed the papers on the desk beside the keyboard.“These aren’t too complicated.Just some new hire paperwork that I need for tax purposes and all that.It looks like you’re already settling in, which is a relief. The last few receptionists…” She grimaced.“Well, if I’m honest, I don’t know how they made it to adulthood.”

“That bad?”
