“Clint Morgan,” he answered after a slight hesitation.“Who are you?”

She tilted her head to the side, what I could make out of her face scrunched up in confusion. There was a slash on her forehead that was still open, blood trickling from it down her brow and cheek, dripping off her chin.“Morgan?”she repeated.“Wait, Nishia’sfather?”

“Who are you?”he shouted.

“Apparently, I’m your angel of death, motherfucker.”She pulled the trigger twice, and I screamed, watching as brains exploded out the back of his head a few milliseconds before his body fell back.

My screams echoed off the walls.I scurried backward until I felt the wall and then pushed myself to a sitting position so I could pull my knees to my chest, trying to get as small as possible. The blast of the gun still ringing in my head, the throb only more intense once I was upright.

I was still screaming when soft, cool hands touched my arms.Jerking back, I tried to get away, but those hands turned to vises on my wrists.“Nishia.”My name barely penetrated, and she used her hold on me to shake me a little.“Fairy!Listen to me!”

The scream died abruptly on my lips, and I looked up at her through my tears.“I’m sorry.I’m sorry.I’m sorry.”

Releasing my wrists, she cupped my face gently.“Why are you sorry?”

“M-my dad…hurt you.”

She released a heavy sigh.“He hurt you too, Nishia.”

“But—”

“You aren’t responsible for the actions of anyone else but yourself, fairy.Try to remember that, okay?”

Before I could answer, the door across the room was kicked open so hard it felt like the wall behind my back shook.Screaming again, I kicked myself backward, but there was nowhere to go.

Samara stood so fast, it made me dizzy, her body moving to shield me.

“Sammy!”I barely recognized Elias’s voice, it was so choked.“Baby girl.Thank God.Ah fuck, thank God.”

Her body went slack above me.“Elias.”I could practically feel her trembling.“D-Daddy.”

I didn’t even understand the significance of her last word before Elias was there, and she was wrapping her legs around his waist.“I’m here, baby girl,” he soothed, but he had a sob in his voice that he couldn’t swallow back.“Never letting you go.Fucking never.”

Elias only took a few steps away before Jack was kneeling in front of me.Even without glasses on, I could see he looked bad.His face was gray, eyes wild, his hands shaking as he touched my face.

“Jack,” I whispered, and he seemed to crumple before me.

With a strangled sob, he jerked upright, taking me with him, lifting me into his arms.Burying his face in my hair, he leaned back against the wall and just held me while he cried.Throwing my arms around his neck, I hugged him to me and let my own tears flow.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-NINE

The monster was quiet,a scared little kid curled up in a deep, dark corner of my mind. From the moment we had Samara’s location until Elias braked outside the old one-story house two counties over, I’d been…lost.Even though I knew in my gut this was Morgan’s doing, I felt no urge to maim or murder. The rage became a ball inside me, lost in the fear.

Scared of never finding Nishia.Never holding her again.Never telling her how much I loved her just one more time.

I’d experienced fear more than once since she’d come into my life, but nothing had prepared me for how afraid I was that I might lose her.

All I could think about was getting to her, protecting her, holding her.I’d worry about killing Morgan later.Until Nishia was safe, nothing else mattered.

Once Elias stopped the car by the porch of the house, he’d been out and kicking in the door before I could move.I felt like I was walking through quicksand, stuck in some warped slow motion as I got unsteadily out of the passenger seat, while, behind us, Ben’s cruiser and a dozen MC brothers including my dad tore up the grass as they finally caught up to us.

Dizziness assaulted me, but I sprinted inside.Elias had Samara in his arms, but then he moved, and all I saw was Nishia. She still had terror in her eyes, her face pale—from fright or her injuries, I didn’t know.

I didn’t remember how I got across the room, but suddenly, I was crouched in front of her, and her eyes flitted nervously back and forth over my face. The tightness in my chest wouldn’t ease.Seeing the blood dried around her nose, the gash on her temple that was still oozing freely, was too much.

Needing to hold her, to reassure myself she was okay, I lifted her into my arms. But as soon as I had her where she belonged, something unfurled deep inside me that I couldn’t control. The monster let out a scream of pain in my head, and I couldn’t hold on any longer.
