“Pheromones,” my father interrupted, grinning.

“What?” I looked at my father. I looked at Finn. I looked at Benedict. And I just shook my head in confusion. “What the hell is going on here?”

“I think your father’s about to become a very rich man,” Finn said with a wide smile.

“Um, okay. Dad, did you play the lottery or something?”

“No, but I think that Mr. Joseph is suggesting that he is going to buy the patent and formula for my irresistible-to-women cologne.”

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“I think I should explain,” Finn said, looking at me with a rueful smile. “But maybe we can go inside and get a drink first?”

“Sounds good to me,” Molly said, rushing forward. “I’m thirsty.”

“Finn, what’s going on?” I stared up at him, and he tilted his head to the side.

“Well, let’s just say you’re either going to love me or absolutely hate me when I’m done.”

ChapterThirty-Six

Checking Account Balance: $75

Savings Account Balance: $10

Boyfriend Count: Who cares?

“What exactly is going on here?” I asked as we stepped into the house. Finn had a sheepish look on his face, and my dad looked positively gleeful. “Mom, what’s going on?” I questioned her. I was shocked to see her face turning pink.

“Oh, Harriet, you will have to forgive me.”

“What are you talking about, Mom?” I asked her suspiciously. I looked back at Polly and Chelsea. “What’s going on here?”

“I have no clue,” Chelsea said, shaking her head. “I’m as perplexed as you are.”

“Me too,” Polly said. “Mom and Dad, what is going on?”

“I don’t know either,” Molly said, shrugging. “I’m clueless, too.”

“You would be clueless,” Chelsea said. “How would you know? You are not our real sister.”

“But I’m almost like one,” Molly said.

I couldn’t help but smile.

“So, I don’t know how to tell you this, Harriet,” Finn said in a deep voice. “But I am, in fact, a billionaire investor.”

“What? No, you’re not. You said you created the website so that I would think that you were a billionaire investor, but it wasn’t real. You’re actually a professor.”

“Well, no, that’s not quite true,” he said and let out a deep sigh.

“I am so confused here. What is going on?”

“I am one of the richest men in the world. I run a number of companies. However, I am also a professor on the side.”

“Oh, of course, because that’s just how it goes,” I said, rolling my eyes. “The richest man in the world is also a professor who’s trying to con me. What is going on?”

“He wasn’t trying to con you, darling,” my mother said. “He just needed proof.”
