“What? But…”

“But nothing. You’re our sister, and we love you, and we both agree that something is a little bit off here. I don’t know if it’s because he’s desperately in love with you, because he just met you. It might be that he’s from a psycho ward and escaped, and this is some sort of play or drama class for him. I don’t know, but something is off, and we would both feel more comfortable if you got out of here.”

“Okay,” I said. “Well, thanks for being honest with me.”

“We did want to tell you. But we wanted to wait until we’d finished the service so we could get paid so we could get the money and not just for ourselves.”

“Yeah, Harriet, you’re our sister, our big sister, and we love you. And we know that you’ve been acting crazy because…”

“You are crazy,” Chelsea said. I glared at her.

“That’s not what I was going to say,” Polly said. “I mean, we’re all a little bit crazy. We’re the crazy Campbells. Our family has had that nickname for ages. But I know you’ve been feeling really nervous about getting the fellowship, and I know Mom and Dad, and their supposed divorce, the job, school, and your housing situation have been a lot. And we want to be here for you. We don’t come from a lot of money and we don’t have much. But we can give you this. And it should help you get a room somewhere or maybe even a studio apartment. You’ll just have to find a job to continue paying the rent. But we both talked about it. We can get part-time jobs as well if it’ll help.”

“Oh my God, I don’t deserve you guys. I love you both. You don’t have to do this for me. I’m the big sister. I’m the one that should be taking care of you.”

“When you become a famous artist,” Chelsea said, “and you sell pieces of art for tens of thousands of dollars each, you can fly us around the world and buy us houses and expensive handbags and shoes.” She smiled at us. “We love you, Harriet. We’re here for you.”

“But you still think I’m a skanky ho, huh?”

“I already told you, if I would’ve seen those baby blues, I might’ve become a skanky ho, too,” she said, giggling.

“He is cute, right?”

“Girls? He’s cute, but he’s crazy,” Polly said. “Don’t forget that.”

“Well, do you think he’s certifiably crazy or just…”

“I don’t know, and I don’t know that I want to find out,” Polly said. “Let’s just finish out this dinner party and bounce.”

“Okay,” I said with a nod. “You’re right. Thank you. I’m so glad I have you in my life.”

I felt almost too embarrassed to take the fried fish into the dining room, but I knew I couldn’t send Polly and Chelsea out there alone. It wasn’t fair.

“Okay, girls, ready?” I said, staring at my sisters, who both nodded eagerly.

“Let’s get this over with,” Polly said.

“Yeah,” Chelsea said. “Let’s do this.”

“Okay, you guys go first, and I’ll follow behind.” Polly rolled her eyes but started moving. We headed out of the kitchen. My sisters were holding up platters of fried fish, and I had a huge tray with what were now soggy and lukewarm fries. I was going to come back for the coleslaw and lemon pieces.

We headed toward the ballroom, and I could hear the sound of laughter. I hoped it continued once we brought in the food.

“Girls, just go along with whatever I say, okay?” I said as I walked behind them.

“Why do I not like the sound of that?” Polly said.

“It’s probably because you know that she’s going to say something stupid,” Chelsea said, and they both giggled. I took a deep breath and ignored them. I couldn’t allow them to get under my skin right now.

As we made our way into the ballroom, I could see Finn standing in the corner talking to Dr. Port, who was drinking something brown in a crystal glass and looked very happy.Oh, well, at least he’s not dead, I thought.
