“Do not finish that sentence,” he instructed fiercely. “My father might not have been able to marry the woman he loved, yourmother, but I refuse to suffer the same fate. Unless you do not feel you could ever love me?” he added uncertainly.

Her fingers tightened about his. “Hunter, I love you now. Deeply. Passionately. I have for some weeks. But I do not wish to cause you any embarrassment with your friends or Society—” Her words came to an end when Hunter’s lips claimed her.

Lips that devoured and claimed her, as Evie’s devoured and claimed him back.

Hunter’s arms about her held her tightly against him when he eventually lifted his head to look at her. “I do not give a damn about Society, and my friends are all well aware, and approve, of my feelings for you and my desire to marry you.” He released her hands to drop onto one knee in front of her. “Evie, I love you. I promise I always will. Will you please consent to become my wife?”

“Yes,” she choked. “Yes, yes, yes.” She threw herself into his arms, the two of them toppling over to once again lose themselves in kissing and caressing each other.

Evie could envisage the future ahead of them.

The two of them in love with each other forever.

Welcoming their future children, ones who would have one loving grandparent, at least, in Lady Margaret.

Evie could not wait for that future to begin.
