“How far back did he go?”

“Far enough to find that Noah was the result of an affair. His mother refused to tell anyone who his father was, so that’s something I’ve had my guy dig further into.”

I nod my head in agreement, looking back at the files. I stop to look at a picture of Noah, Layla, and Caden at some kind of black-tie event.

Vaughn leans over the counter and presses a finger over Layla’s face.

“Now,shecould be someone worth looking into.”

“Why?”

“Because while it appears that there’s a lot of information about her available online, it’s all very generic. You said she was involved in drugging Caden. She was the only other witness to that day. And she lied to you about their supposedly happy marriage when you told her about Jesse. Unfortunately, she’s pushing daisies—”

“Vaughn!”

“Just because someone’s died doesn’t make them a fucking martyr, sweetheart. I call it as I see it. It’s a pity we didn’t get any answers before she kicked the bucket. From what you’ve told me, for some reason, she remained very close to Spellman. If anyone knew his secrets, it would have been her.”

Ignoring his usual crassness, I drop the file onto his desk with a frown. “I think you could be onto something, Vaughn.”

He nods succinctly. “I’ll get my guy on it.”

As I blow out a deep exhalation, my stomach rumbles loudly. My eyes fly up to meet my friend's laughter-filled ones.

“Oh my God, excuse me!”

“When’s the last time you’ve eaten?” He pins me with a less-than-impressed look.

I blink several times, and my eyes blow wide when I realise I’ve not eaten yet today.

“Umm, maybe yesterday?”

He huffs dramatically as he stands and holds out his hand. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s grab a sandwich. I could use some air.”

CHAPTER27

SUMMER

Having spentsome time wandering around the busy streets, we hit Vaughn’s favourite deli, Luciano’s.

“You are freaking obsessed with this place.”

My boss shrugs. “They make the best meatballs, okay?”

“Meatballs are disgusting.”

Vaughn hits me with a deadpan. “The fact that you’d say that to me makes me doubt whether we can be friends, Miss St James.”

I shake my head, getting into the queue as Vaughn steps inside behind me.

Once we’ve filled our order with an overly chatty Adamo Luciano, we slowly meander towards Rogue several blocks over in companionable silence.

As the building comes into view two blocks down, now lit up by streetlamps and tastefully done uplighting, I can see that it’s already gearing up to be a busy night.

“Why don’t you take the night off?”

Vaughn’s suggestion catches me off guard, but I playfully bump his hip with mine. “Have you forgotten already? I need the distraction.”

“Anna still not giving you any more shifts?”
