We watch the ashes swirl and twist as they make their descent, landing all along the water as Ford begins to shift higher.

Alex climbs back onto the seat with a sad smile as the door slips closed. He gently enfolds me in his embrace, and I willingly nuzzle in against his firm body, seeking the comfort of his touch.

The chopper circles once, then twice in muffled silence, before making a sharp turn away from Playa Conchal.

And instead of looking back, I fix my sights firmly on the horizon, spreading my wings just like Lita said I would in her letter.

I press my cheek against the steady thump of Alex’s heart. “What’s your favorite place?”

He doesn’t miss a beat. Instead, his arms lock more tightly around me as he softly replies, “Anywhere you are, Sunshine.Youare my favorite place.”

CHAPTER24

ALEX

“So the casa is—”

“Yes.” Ford cuts me off with a single affirmative through gritted teeth. Unperturbed, I continue.

“And everything is set for tomorrow, right?”

Rey has slipped into the waiting SUV on the tarmac at Tamarindo, where we’ve returned with the chartered chopper, so questioning Ford now is hopefully not going to ruin any surprises.

He rolls his eyes. “This ain’t my first rodeo, fucker.”

I quirk a brow, my eyes encompassing his huge frame in one fluid movement. “You can take the boy out of Texas…”

He sighs heavily. “Christ almighty, DeMarco. I donotget what that ray of sunshine sees in you. You’re a complete—”

Rey cuts him off when she pops her head back out of the open door. “Incorrigible asshole is the term I prefer to use.”

Ford snorts as a smile blooms on his face, and in that moment, I notice smile lines I’d not seen before now, only adding to the mystery of why this young man has become such a hardened soul.

A broken man.

Takes one to know one.

Clearly, Vaughn Burton is a fan of taking in strays.

“It’s all set. I’ll pick you up in the a.m.”

He tips his hat with a nod to Rey before stalking back toward the waiting chopper.

I usher her back inside the car, and our driver smoothly leaves the airstrip as Ford once again takes to the sky.

“What was he talking about?”

I press my lips together, absolutely failing to hide my grin. “YouknowI’m a top-tier secret keeper, baby. You’ll just have to wait until tomorrow.”

Her eyes narrow, but she doesn’t push, knowing by now that I’m a motherfucking vault when I want to be.

It takes no time at all until we’re back at the casa, and my mouth lifts in a huge ass smirk when the sound of music hits Rey’s ears as the SUV comes to a slow halt.

She turns to me with wide eyes.

“Is that…‘Despacito’?”

My smirk grows, transforming into a wide, bright smile. “The Bieber remix, I’ll have you know.”
