“Yes, but—”

“The curse doesn’t apply, Beth. Besides, there’s enough to be worrying about without adding the weight of that.”

I hoped he was right even as I feared he might not be and glanced down at the envelope again. It was pointless delaying the inevitable. I tugged the note free and unfolded it. The message was short and to the point. I read it with a deepening sense of incredulity.

“Well?” Lugh said, with a touch of impatience. “What’s the sentence?”

I lifted my gaze to his, unsure whether to laugh or to cry. “My punishment is being bonded to the Deva council for a period of two years.”

He blinked. “What?”

“They’ve forced me to do what Mom wouldn’t. They’ve made me the council’s relic hunter. They want me to help them find the missing hoard.”

He stared at me for several seconds, then a smile spread slowly across his face. “Oh, that’s delicious.”

“It is indeed.”

I was now inside the inner circle. I now had direct access to the councilors and the records. I might finally be able to not only discover who had planted the singing bowl to implicate my brother in the theft of the hoard, but also start investigating who had betrayed my mother.

“Give them utter hell, dear sister.”

“I intend to, brother mine. I intend to.”
