“Thank you,” I repeated.

I stepped to the side and waited for my order so the person behind me could take their turn, then I grabbed my coffee and the fruit once it was ready. I headed outside to sit where I could be in the sun, and I called Krissy.

It had been almost a week of being in Key West, and I was settling into the routine quite well. I had been spending a lot of time with Libby, and it felt like Neils was trying to be present as much as he could, too. He did work an awful lot, but he still managed to get it put away for the day with enough time to be able to hang out with Libby for at least a couple hours.

Since I was the one who was picking her up and dropping her off for school, that took away the pressure and disruption on his schedule during the day, which enabled him to work straight through. I knew how it was when working on a writing project. It might not seem like much, but having that big of a distraction twice a day was bound to make it difficult for him to concentrate well enough to keep moving along on his work.

Over the course of the week, I’d discovered a small café I really enjoyed, and Friday morning I decided to head over for a cup of coffee and a light breakfast after dropping Libby off at school. Not only would it be a nice, relaxing morning, it would give me the time to call and catch up with Krissy.

She’d tried to call me a couple times over the week, but I missed both calls. I sent her a couple texts letting her know that I’m going to make time to call her, and this morning, I’m making good on that promise.

“I thought you got sucked into the Bermuda Triangle or something,” Krissy said after she answered.

I laughed. “Sorry, I did mean to get back to you sooner. Taking care of a kid is a lot more work than I expected. But hey, I’m managing.”

“Taking care of the kid, or the daddy?” she teased.

“Oh stop.”

“What! I’m only human, and he’s so damn sexy,” she replied. “I’m drooling over those pics you sent. Seriously.”

“I mean, sure,” I replied, trying to come off as dismissive. “Sure, but don’t forget the kid was in the picture, too.”

“Right,” she said. “I did notice the cute kid, but like, then I saw the dad and wanted to call him daddy myself.”

“You’re impossible!”

Krissy laughed. “But you love me anyway. You know I mean it all out of love. You deserve someone great in your life, and why not go with a guy you know is good with kids? Being a single dad is pretty hot. I mean, it shows you already that he’s good with taking care of someone, and the fact she’s his little girl is just the cutest. I mean, I would have the toughest time if I were you not just prancing around the house making sure I got his attention every chance I could. Like, I’m not saying you should jump him when the kid is home, but isn’t she at school most of the day? That gives you all the time in the world to just have some fun with the dad, you know?”

“I’m not going to say I haven’t thought of that,” I replied. “But I’m going to say I’ve thought it through to the extent I know it’s a really bad idea.”

“Oh, come on, live a little,” she said. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“Haven’t we already had this conversation?” I asked. “I already ran through the long list of things that could go wrong.”

“You worry too much,” Krissy told me. “He’s only technically your boss.”

“He’s paying me to uphold my end of the contract he has put out. That’s pretty literally a boss, not really technically,” I replied. “And you know its fucking taboo to be sleeping with your boss.”

“So what? That’s like, so old-fashioned to think that way anyway. I mean, if I were you, I’d just go for it and see what happens.”

“You’re also the queen of fucking around and finding out,” I replied with another laugh. “I could never be as free flowing as you are with your life choices.”

“Sure, you could. You already did the hard part of getting your degree and shit. You might as well embrace the wild side now. Besides, you might find that you two click so well, it could turn into a long-term thing.”

“He’s my dad’s best friend.”

“All I’m hearing is excuses.”

“Jesus,” I laughed. “You really are hard to reason with.”

“I’m just right, and you know I am. But hey, if you’re able to be down there and around him without jumping his bones, more power to you. I would have been in bed with him the end of the first day. And there was that dream you had.”

“It was a dream,” I quickly replied. “You have no control over what you do in your dream, and that’s that. I’ve done some pretty fucked up things in dreams that I would never do in real life. And you know, there is the problem of Libby, too.”

“What’s the issue?”

“I can’t get all close to her dad then just up and leave. I mean, she already loves how much time she and I get to spend together, I don’t want to put her through losing another important person in her life.”
