“Irene doesn’t know she’s not Delphine’s size,” he says softly.

I giggle, imagining Irene the cow trying to follow Delphine the goat in the house.

Vera sees me coming and a sheepish look flits across her face. “I’m so sorry I didn’t catch you in time,” she says. “They just checked out and then I got distracted with something else.” Her face lights up when she notices who’s with me. “Well, this is a treat.”

“Isn’t it? No worries. It gave me a chance to hang out with these guys on the walk over.” I lean against Theo when he moves next to me and they all take turns hugging Vera.

“You should stay a while,” Vera tells them. “Maybe we can finally get you bachelors a wife if you stick around long enough. You don’t want your sister getting married before you do, do you?” She winks at me and my mouth drops open.

They turn as one toward me, closing in as they loom over me, all talking at once.

“What’s she talking about?”

“So that’s what Jo meant the other day…”

“You got something you want to tell us, Scarlett?”

“It was the Hawaiian shirt, wasn’t it.”

“I knew I didn’t trust that guy.”

I hold up my hand and give Vera a scorching look that has her hustling off to do something very important…as far as she can get from my wrath.

“Yeah, you better run,” I call after her.

When I look at my brothers, they all have various degrees of scowls on their faces. I put my hand on my hips, mostly to brace myself, but it’s also the way I’ve been dealing with them since I was little.

“Wipe the scowls off your faces. No one’s getting married, so you can just calm down.”

“You like the guy though,” Theo says. “I knew it.”

“He deserve you?” Callum growls, chest all bowed up. “Where is he right now?”

“His mom just had a heart attack and bypass surgery,” I say, enjoying the deflate in his stance. “And it remains to be seen if he deserves me or not.” I think of his apology this morning and my heart thaws almost all the way. “He’s pretty incredible.”

I try not to go full-swoon since they wouldn’t be able to handle it.

“You up for long distance?” Sutton’s brow is crinkled and I reach out and smooth it with my thumbs.

“Stop it. You’re too old to frown like this, it’ll start sticking,” I tell him.

He curses under his breath. “I knew I should’ve looked into him more thoroughly.”

“Oh, for crying out loud,” I groan. “Grinny adores him.”

“She know you’re marrying him?” Wyatt snaps.

“No one’s marrying anyone. But I get the impression that Grinny wouldn’t mind if I did.” I smirk, and that just makes them scoff, their expressions like sullen five-year-old boys. “I’m twenty-three and you haven’t liked anyone I’ve ever dated, but you like him, I know you do.”

“So youaredating him…” Wyatt says.

His arms fold across his chest as he studies me like I’m his next patient.

“We’re…seeing where this goes,” I say.

Callum grumbleswhere is heagain from under his breath and I shoot him a look that would normally have him caving, but he doesn’t back down. “He wants you? Once his mom is taken care of, he figures out a way to close up shop in Boston”—he attempts Jamison’s accent when he says Boston—“and he gets his ass by your side.”

“Oh, so now you’re wanting him by my side? Make up your mind, brother.” I laugh and reach out to poke his side. He jerks and scowls and I go put my arm around him. He’s stiff for a second but then relaxes against me and I lean back to look at him. “You’re not gonna start taking tips from them and get all barky with me now, are you?”
