“Why? You have somethin’ in mind?” I keep acting like I don’t know what today is, but I know as soon as we make it through that door, she’s going to lose her shit in the best way possible.

She licks her lips quickly and forces a fake smile. “Nope, not at all.” The way she says it makes me think I’m going to get my ass reamed later.

We’re at the small stairwell leading into the bar, and I let Luna go up first. She puts her hand on the door and then pushes it open, only for everyone in the club to yell ‘Surprise!!!!’ as loud as they can.

Luna’s smile is so wide it could spread across the entire Earth. She’s so happy, and so am I. This is exactly why I played it off like I didn’t have anything planned. “You rascal! You did this, didn’t you?!” Luna whips around and points at me.

“I did, but there’s something else I did that I think you’re going to love even more. But that’s upstairs,” I tell her.

“Okay, um, give me a little bit to say hello to everyone, and then you can show me?”

“Sure thing, beautiful.”

Luna and I make our rounds, saying hello to everyone and even getting dragged into a few really lengthy conversations. After two hours, I’m finally able to take her upstairs to my room, and as soon as she rounds my bed, there’s a silent scream coming through her lips. “You did not!”

“I sure the fuck did. Anything for you, baby,” I comment with a shit-eating grin on my face.

Luna confessed she’s wanted a white Flemish Giant for a very long time, and she reminded me she did when Kevin left her a dead one. I wanted to make sure she had her dream come true, and I already went through the process of making sure she could have one at her apartment and paid the pet deposit for her. I even got everything he needs too.

“What’s his name? Gosh, he’s so sweet.”

The white fluff ball hops right over to her. “His name is Carrot, and he’s three years old. He was an owner surrender. Apparently, when they bought him, they were told he was a Mini Rex, but the dude kept growing and growing.”

“I love how he has one blue eye and one red one, and he’s so affectionate.”

“They did say he was a complete cuddle bug on the rescue’s website. I figured it was a match made in Heaven.”

“Kind of like you and me.” Luna glances up and then wraps her arms around me, holding me as tightly as she can. “Thank you so much, Brennon. This has seriously been the best birthday ever. I’m so fucking happy right now!”

“I was hoping you’d be. Sorry I made it seem like I forgot about it, but I wanted to blow you away. I think Carrot might be a good proofreader, too. Looks like he’s got some good eyes on him.”

Luna cracks up laughing. “I’m sure he will be. He could even sit out on the patio with me while I write. That would be perfect!”

“I agree.”

Luna and I are still in the middle of our conversation when there’s a knock on my door. I head over to it, and it’s Killer. “Breaker wants to have church, man.”

“Now?”

Killer nods. “Yeah. I heard some rumblings about Diablo hitting two other clubs outside of LA.”

“Fuck. I’ll be down in a couple,” I tell Killer, and he walks off. “Baby girl, I’m sorry, I need to go into church.”

“You go right ahead. Me and Carrot are going to get acquainted for a few. Come and get me when you’re done, though, okay?”

“Sure thing,” I say and press a hard kiss against Luna’s lips.

She’s the light of my fucking life, and I’m just so glad I don’t have to worry about anyone ever taking her away. Her monster is gone, and he’s going to stay right where I put him—in hell.
