From him, we learned that his boss, Harry Crosby, had been the ringleader of an extensive trafficking organization that had operated out of the Central Coast of California for decades. When Manual Varilla arrived, a turf war ensued between him and Crosby.

He also confirmed that some of the containers liberated in Felixstowe belonged to his boss and some to the other organization. The only thing he didn’t seem to know was who Varilla worked for.

Having that much to go on, though, gave the UN coalition teams something to sink their teeth into, as they say.

“Press, Luisa, Zin, and Jada, along with their friends and family, will arrive later today,” I said, walking up behind Jaicon and wrapping my arms around her waist as she prepared our breakfast.

Tomorrow, I would officiate the double ceremony of two best friends marrying two best friends. My heart was full of joy, but not just because of the wedding.

Jaicon carried two plates to the table from where we could look out at the El Pomar valley.

She returned to the kitchen and filled two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. “No coffee for me today,” she said over her shoulder when I poured myself a cup.

“No?”

“Juice is fine.”

I sat down next to her and breathed in the scent of the vegetable omelets she’d made for us. “This looks wonderful, my love. Thank you.” I leaned over and kissed her.

“So, I have something to tell you.”

“And I, you. Would you mind if I went first?”

Her eyes scrunched, but she nodded.

I stood and pushed my chair out of the way, then moved hers so she was facing me.

“You don’t want to finish breakfast first?” she asked, giggling when I parted her legs and knelt between them.

Her expression sobered when I took both of her hands in mine. “You have brought me back to life, my beloved Jaicon. My love for you is the reason I wake up each morning with a sense of peace and a full heart. ‘I love you’ doesn’t seem adequate to describe the depth of what I feel for you.”

Jaicon’s eyes flooded, but a smile spread across her face when I pulled a small box from my pocket.

“Will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?” I asked, opening the box to show her the ring I’d had made for her.

She put her hands on either side of my face as tears streamed down her cheeks. “Yes, yes, yes, I will marry you.”

I slipped the ring on her finger and kissed her. “What did you want to tell me, my love?”

She gripped both my hands in hers and stared into my eyes. “We’re going to have a baby, Tryst.”

“We are?” I said, my voice choked with emotion.

She nodded as more tears ran down her cheeks.

We hadn’t been trying to conceive, but we hadn’t been using birth control either. Both of us agreed if we were blessed with a baby, we’d be thrilled, and if we weren’t, our love would be enough.

“A baby,” I repeated, closing my eyes and saying a prayer of thanks.

“A baby,” she repeated. “Our baby.”
