“Yeah, I’m starving.”

I grab one of the menus off the table and open it up.

“What are you hungry for, baby?”

I don’t mean to call her that, but I’m not taking it back. It’s only a matter of time. Hard to tell if the flush in her cheeks is from that or the drinks she’s had tonight. She doesn’t seem to notice and sips her beer while reading through the menu. Her eyes light up and she points to the appetizers.

“Let’s get nachos!”

“That’s my girl.” I give her side a squeeze.

That time it’s on purpose. Making her blush has become my new favorite hobby. Besides, I want to know where we stand and make my intentions clear without scaring her away. Toeing the line while she’s a little tipsy allows me to do some mental recon while she’s not so guarded. Some of the guys are already filtering out, mostly the married players hurrying home to their wives. Banks walks off to chat up more groupies.

I pull her closer, even though we’re essentially sitting by ourselves now.

“So, no boyfriend, huh?”

“Oh, I see how it is.”

“How is it?” I chuckle.

“Shots!” Jonesy yells when a tray of them shows up again. These guys need to ease up a little on the liquor. I place our food order with the server after she drops off the shots. Then give Jonesy a pregnant blink, he gets the message and turns his attention away from us.Finally.

Bridget picks up her shot and tries to hand me one, but I shake my head.

Her brow furrows. “Why not?”

“I’m driving.”

“Welp, more for me!” She takes her shot, then prepares to toss back mine, but I snatch her wrist and carefully peel the glass from her fingers, setting it back down.

“You’re too small for that much alcohol. Boyfriend. Go.”

“You’re kind of a flirt, huh? The thing at the house, asking if I have a boyfriend...”

“This isn’t flirting, Gray. It’s just talking.”

“Oh. Yeah. I know.” Her shoulders droop.

I lean back, smile, and bite my lip, then take a chance by grabbing her hips and pulling her onto my lap. I open my legs so she’s straddling my thigh. Her hair is piled into a messy updo, and her sweet scent is like a drug. With one hand, I reach around her stomach and haul her back so she’s pressed to my front. Her breaths come in quicker, and feeling her like this is exhilarating. Then I grasp her neck and pull her ear to my lips.

“If I was flirting, I’d tell you how turned on I am seeing you in my number and how pretty you look straddling me like this. Do you remember what happened the last time you were on my lap?”

Goose bumps spread across her skin under my fingers.

“Mmhmm.” Her voice is tight.

“All I did was ask if you have a boyfriend. So?”

“No boyfriend.”

Sweet relief.

“Good.”

Her chest rises and falls. Is she feeling trapped or aroused? I hope both. Her thumb strokes the arm I have wrapped around her. I don’t take for granted how well we fit together.

“You aresoa flirt,” she says matter-of-factly, making me laugh.
