I feel sad for not being enthusiastic about her move and the new job.

I just knew I’d miss her so much. It’s the first time we’ve lived in different cities.

I can only hope that I get to tell her all of this for myself, that it isn’t too late.

I pass the time running over my thoughts and trying not to make myself go insane.

I practice calm breathing and tell myself it’s going to be okay. In my heart, I feel that there is a way out of this, yet I don’t know how. I don’t know what’s happening in the real world. I don’t know how Rayne is coping with any of this.

And then there’s Angelo Medici. I shudder at such a thought. The man must be a monster, just like the rest of them.

I can’t imagine he would be a sweet, charming, hearts and flowers kind of guy.

One thing is for sure, I can’t lose hope. If losing my parents has taught me anything, it’s that Rayne and I are survivors. We won’t be taken down lightly.

I will fight to the bitter end.

At night I pray to them and ask them for help. I ask them to watch over us and keep us safe.

I can only hope to god that they can hear me.

The door bursts open sometime the next day. I tend to lose track since it’s always dark in here.

She stays in the shadows, even though I’d never forget her face. She haunts my dreams.

She holds out the phone to me as I spring up from the mattress.

“Talk,” she says. “It’s your sister.”

My eyes go wide as I grab the phone hastily. “Rayne?” I whisper.

“Mia!” she cries. I hear the immediate relief in her voice. “Are you all right?”

She sobs into the phone, and I start to tear up.Be strong, Mia! It’ll only be harder for her if you lose it…

“I’m okay…” I sniff in between tears. “Please come get me, Rayne…please…”

“Have they hurt you?” she demands.

“I’m okay …” I breathe. “They’ve been very civil considering…no!No!Let me talk to my sister!”

The phone gets snatched away.

“Mia!” I hear Rayne yell. “Mia!”

“She’s alive. There’s the proof you need,” my captor says coldly.

“You won’t get away with this,” I hear her say, her voice like ice. “I’ll make sure of it.”

She laughs that horrible laugh that makes me want to choke her. “Oh, but I am. And don’t go getting any crazy ideas. Remember, I have eyes and ears everywhere in this city.”

“I hardly even spoke to her!” Rayne cries out.

“You’ll attend the Gala as planned. You have Angelo’s trust now, and this is exactly where I want him.”

“You’re sick,” she sobs. “Truly fucking sick.”
