“I don’t fucking know, Fynn,” Angelo barks back. “What would you like me to do with the information at hand? Why would Aleksi send her if it wasn’t real?”

“We can debate this in the car,” Marco adds. “We need to move.”

I spend less than a minute with the auctioneer before I step out the front of the building and zip up my jacket.

“We’re re-convening at Fortress,” Marco informs me.

Angelo is talking on the phone but swiftly ends the call when he sees me.

It’s then we see Rocco over by the Audi. He’s walking directly toward us at an unnatural pace, even for him. Angelo has informed him of the situation by the look on his face, and he’s not happy.

“What the fuck is Rocco doing now?” Marco shakes his head.

Rocco signals us to hold fast, and I look confused from Dom over to Rocco again. The rain starts to sputter, and two things happen simultaneously.

One, I see Nadia stepping into her car with her guards on her flank, and the car speeds away from the curb.

Two, Rocco passes by the Audi we arrived in, and about six seconds later there’s a huge, piercing noise. We watch in horror as it fucking blows up right in front of our eyes.

The doors blow off into the air, engulfing the entire vehicle with flames.

All I see is Rocco flying through the air and hitting the ground, landing on his front as we all shield ourselves from the blast and duck to the ground. As I stare through the murky haze, it seems to happen in slow motion.

“Jesus. Fucking. Christ.” Angelo looks up towards the blaze as onlookers scream and start to scatter. Dom has his gun drawn as we all pick ourselves up and run toward Rocco. Thankfully he appears to be moving and in one piece.

Shock runs through me as my ears ring.

“Holy shit!” I call as I hear my brothers’ voices with other profanities as we approach Rocco on the ground. He has his gun in his hands and flips onto his back to still scour the area, pointing it in various directions. Even though he could have just been blown to smithereens, he never falters. Not for a second.

Dom tries to push us back out of harm's way, but none of us are having it.

“What the actual fuck?” Marco crouches down to Rocco. “Are you okay, Roc?”

We hear sirens ensue very quickly. Fucking great. Someone has obviously notified the authorities, but that’s to be expected.

I look toward the wrecked Audi, which is now on fire, and shake my head. That was a little too close.

Thank fuck Gus wasn’t in the Merc, he went back to Fortress after dropping Angelo off. And we were all moments away from getting into the vehicle, heading straight to our impending deaths.

Someone’s sending a fucking message. Loud and clear.

Nadia wasn’t fucking kidding.

Rocco glances up at Dom and blinks a couple of times. “Am I dead?” Rocco gasps.

Dom is on bended knee with his gun pointed behind us, and he shakes his head. “Nah, man, you’re stuck with us.”

“I need a fucking vacation,” he gruffs, still clutching his gun to his chest. “I’m getting too old for this shit.”

MIA

I’m notunused to the madness that follows the Medici family around, so it doesn’t come as a surprise when Dante calls me to find out where I am - at home - and then tells me to pack a bag.

“What the hell for?” I say, stopping in my tracks. “Are we planning a sudden vacation?”

“I’ll explain it all later.” He sounds stressed.
