“It’s real. I’ve got you.” He pulls me close to his chest and hugs me.
I take in his scent; the spicy, woodsy, sexy smell that is Fynn.
I love him so damn much.
“What happened?”
When I pull back to look at him, he smiles at me. I don’t even notice the commotion around me anymore; it all fades into the background.
I’m here with him, and that’s all that matters.
“Everything is okay,” he says. “It's all taken care of.”
“How?”
“Angelo is always ten steps ahead. Roberto is no longer a problem. His army is annihilated. Half of his men turned on him after Angelo bought them off. So you see, my darling, nothing is stronger than the power of love.”
“Jesus Christ,” Angelo mutters. “We need to get the fuck out of here.”
“Is the fucking ambulance here yet?” I hear Dante ask.
“I’m fine,” I whisper. “I’m just happy to be alive.”
“You’re still gonna get checked out, though, no matter what you say,” Fynn tells me.
He lifts me up, carrying me in his arms. “Close your eyes, baby,” he whispers in my ear. “Put your head against my chest. You don’t need to see any of this.”
“Is everyone okay?” I dread to think of the carnage that took place.
“Everyone that matters is fine, baby.”
“What did he do to me?”
“It doesn’t matter now.”
“Tell me, Fynn.”
He sighs, pulling me against his chest even tighter. “Sage.”
“Tell me, I want to know…”
“He buried you.”
I cling to Fynn. I tried to hold it in, but I just can’t anymore. The floodgates open, and I start to weep.
“That bastard.”
“He’s dead,” Fynn says. “We took him out. It’s over, baby.”
I cry quietly as he carries me toward his car. He opens the passenger side and sits me on the seat, crouching down to look at me.
“I’m so sorry about all of this. None of it should’ve happened.”
I cup one side of his face. “It’s not your fault. It’s nobody’s fault. He was a madman. He would’ve stopped at nothing to hurt this family.”
“Your brothers? Enzo… Rocco…”
“They’re all okay, it was a close call. But everything is gonna be okay from now on. I promise.”
