“Oh, that was quicker than I thought,” I reply, jumping up excitedly and making the guys give me a curious look.

I had planned on setting everything up in here, but they’re in here and somewhat distracted, and I think we got the stuff to have a BBQ last time we went to the store so I could set it all up in the kitchen and out into the backyard, and then we can have BBQ for lunch too.

“Do you want some help bringing it in Blue?” Ace asks as he passes his controller to Rip as he starts to stand.

“No!” I yell and then actually physically face-palm myself because I am clearly not good at keeping things a surprise.

Immediately, they pause the game as they turn to look at me, and I hear Gerald chuckle from by the door, clearly enjoying my awkwardness.

Rome raises his eyebrow, “What’s going on, Jynx?”

Ace snorts, “I’m more curious about what made her actually face-palm herself. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone actually do that!”

Put me in an interrogation room where they use torture techniques, and I won’t break. I’ll sassily reply to anything that they ask me, but right here and now, trying to surprise my men, I feel like a deer in headlights, and I just stare at them, my mouth opening and closing as I desperately try to think of some sort of excuse to hide what I’m actually doing, or trying to do.

“Erm,” I finally intelligently say and almost face-palm myself again. By this point, the guys are so amused that they’re barely holding back their laughter, and I have no idea how to explain it, so I go with the truth without giving anything away, “I have a surprise for you all, and I need you to stay in here until I say.”

They all share a look, and Rome replies, “Okay, Koroleva, we’ll stay put and carry on playing our game.”

I sigh like I’ve just had the weight of the world removed from my shoulders; apparently, not only am I not subtle today but I’m also feeling slightly dramatic, “Thank you! It shouldn’t take me too long.”

They all look immensely curious but don’t ask any questions as I practically run from the room so I don’t put my foot in it again and end up just telling them what I have planned. Gerald moves out of my way as I rush past and then follows me as I head toward the front door, where I’m assuming the parcels are.

“Would you like some help moving them, Miss Jynx? There are quite a few,” Gerald asks me, sounding amused.

“Holy fuck, it did not seem this much when I was buying it,” I exclaim as I stare at the massive pile.

“Ah, that’s the danger with buying things online,” Gerald replies and then asks again, “would you like some help?”

“Yes, please, can you bring them into the kitchen, please? I want to set it all up in there!” I reply, feeling excited even though I know the guys probably won’t be as enthused as I am since they have never had a birthday before and don’t really know what they’re missing out on.

“Of course,” Gerald replies as he bends to grab a few boxes, and I do the same. “May I ask what all of this is for and why the guys can’t see?”

Smiling happily, I reply, “They’ve never had a birthday, no presents or cake, nothing.. So I’m starting a new tradition for us, where we do birthdays properly, but first, I need to throw one for all of them together.”

Gerald’s smile stretches wide as his eyes twinkle, and for some reason, he looks really proud, “I think that’s a wonderful idea; they’re going to love it. Let’s get this all set up for them then before they get too curious and decide to come and see what you’re up to.”

“Good idea, let’s go. Oh shit,” I suddenly curse as we make our way into the kitchen.

“Miss?” Gerald questions.

“I got them all presents, but I completely forgot to get any gift wrap, and I wanted this to be perfect.”

“I have some,” Gerald says, his voice calm. “I’ll help you with the rest of the boxes and then go and get it for you. Would you like some help setting everything up as well?”

I look around at the boxes that we’ve already got in the kitchen, knowing that there are at least five more by the front door, and I nod enthusiastically, “Yes, please, otherwise I think I’m likely to be here all day, and will definitely be interrupted.”

Gerald chuckles quietly, and it’s not long until we’ve got all the boxes in the kitchen, and I’m decorating the table and wrapping presents, pretty much just trying to make it look like an over-the-top birthday celebration because I think they deserve it. With Gerald and I both working hard to get it set up and him seeming to understand what I want entirely, we soon have the banners set up and balloons on the back of every chair as well as on the sides of the doors that lead into the backyard where we have put even more banners and balloons and I’ve already taken the stuff for a very simple BBQ out there. There’s a bright tablecloth that says happy birthday, laid out on the table inside, and then I’ve laid their gifts out in separate piles, and then they each have their own cakes with the flavours that they prefer and with candles too.

That bit I am slightly nervous about because although I know for sure that Mase likes chocolate fudge, Mal likes lemon cake, and Ace likes strawberry and chocolate, I only really have a vague idea of what the others like, so that’s a bit more of a guess. However, cake is cake, and everyone loves it, so even if they aren’t their favourite flavours, I’m sure they’ll like them.

Putting my hands on my hips, I look around at everything and smile, “Done.”

“It looks brilliant. Would you like me to go and get the others?” Gerald asks.

“Yes, please, and thank you for helping me,” I reply, my nerves starting to build now.

Gerald smiles and nods as he leaves the room quickly, I think he must be sensing that I’m starting to get nervous about what the guy's reactions are going to be. In order to keep myself occupied in the brief moments that it's going to take for the guys to get here, I decide to light the candles on all of their cakes.
