“Never that, my lord. But you know how tiresome I find the court,”

“Mmm, you promised to stay out of politics if I let you run your little charity for the lost souls of the city.”

“And I have My King,”

“Yet by your side stands an unauthorised newborn,” he said, each word dripping with disdain. The other occupants of the room slowly turned to face the confrontation, their whispers growing as they waited for the response.

Morticia’s composure was perfect, politics a deadly dance she knew well.

“They executed her maker in a blood hunt. It is my understanding that it has paid her debt.” Her smooth tone, confident and assured as she inclined her head in a show of respect.

“What is your name?” The question was angled to the young girl.

“S.. Sarah,”

With an impatient sigh, Draven let go of Talia’s hand and leaned forward.

“Sarah, what?”

“Sarah.... Clements,” eyes wide, the girl blinked nervously.

Smiling in satisfaction, a hint of fang showing, he tilted his head to the side.

“You lie to your King?”

Casting a fearful look at Morticia, the girl dropped to her knees. Glancing up at Ghost as the werewolf shifted uncomfortably, Talia frowned.

“Clements is my mother’s name,” her voice shaking

“What is your name child.. no more lies” Draven’s voices held a smug tone. As he watched the girl. Fear and confusion crossing the girl’s face as she struggled to think of the right response.

“Sarah Cox,”

Out of the corner of her eye, Talia saw Ghost’s eyes close. The werewolves around the room stilling but not moving from their posts.

“The wolf, Ryder, is your brother?”

More and more faces were turning to listen, the indistinct murmur rising.

“Yes, my King,”

“You came into my city and knowingly sought to make yourself more than human. Causing the death of one of my most trusted servants and the near death of your brother.”

“I am sorry” blood tears trickled down her pale skin. Her hands shaking.

“Then you should share his punishment as you caused both betrayal’s,”

“She is a newborn, my King,” Morticia said quietly. “I am sure her heart was in the right place and that she did not understand how our laws work.”

“It’s a matter of trust, my dear Morticia,” tapping his finger on the chair he smiled. “She will need to prove herself one of us and not of one of her kin.”

When she spoke, caution had crept into the dark-haired vampire’s voice. Her voice was husky and soft, almost comforting.

“I have taken her under my wing. She is learning our ways.”

“Perhaps... if she proves herself strong enough.” Draven rose to his feet and approached the girl. Every step menacing.

“Stand,”
