Talia felt the chill of the energy emanating from him, sending a shiver of fear down her spine. Mesmerized, she watched as his voice commanded the young girl to stand before he stretched out his hand. Trembling, Talia felt his power spread over her like an icy wind.

Her eyes widening in horror as the vampire’s skin broke out in tiny beads of sweat. Sucking in a sharp breath as her mind caught up to what her eyes were truly seeing.

Blood.

Crimson droplets of blood of blood rising from the girl’s shaking body to be absorbed by his waiting hand. The girl emitted a choked, sobbing sound of agony.

She couldn’t move, couldn’t tear her gaze away from the awful sight.

The music fading till the only sound was Sarah’s soft whimpering cries. Every face had now turned to watch. Some fascinated, others moving away, but most watched carefully neutral as the king pulled the blood out of the young vampiress.

Drop by drop, the blood rose. Pulled out of every pore of her skin. It floated towards him to form a spinning ball of red that hovered over his palm.

Some faces watched, fascinated, as the girl’s dress soaked through. The crimson blood dripping from the hem onto the white tiles

Held in place by his command even as her knees tried to buckle. Her skin starting to shrink and contort. Her pretty face hollowing out. All colour fading.

Without hesitation, Talia stood and began moving.

Her hand resting on Draven’s shoulder, even as she pressed herself against his side.

“My King” her words were soft but clear in the room’s stillness. “Today is a celebration. Let us be...” her brain working overtime as she hunted for the right words. She couldn’t sit by and watch this torture. “Merciful”,

She could feel the tears pricking her eyes. Blinking them back, she whispered softly only for his ears.

“Please don’t do this,”

Draven shifted his gaze and met her eyes. His own widening only ever so slightly. Almost as if he had forgotten she was there with him

“as you wish,”

His fingers closing around the ball of blood, holding it for a moment before turning his hand towards the girl, his fingers spreading out. The ball shattering into small individual droplets of blood that hung in the air. With a flex of willpower, they shot back towards the girl. Falling back a step, she took a shuddering breath as the blood absorbed back into her skin. The power receding from them both, dropping Sarah to her knees.

Turning his back on her, he reached for Talia.

His fingers touching her cheek gently, reverently. Forcing herself to not flinch, she met his eyes.

“My wife is right. Today is a day of celebration.” Looking back at Morticia, he nodded at the girl.

“The newborn is pardoned. Teach her right or I will,”

Taking Talia’s hand, he turned his back on them as Morticia helped the shaking girl to her feet.

“My love” bringing her fingertips to his lips, his eyes never leaving hers.

“Now, do you see why I need you? Only you bring lightness to my dark. Only you can reignite my icy heart.” His words whispered, “save me from my curse.”

Heart in her throat, shivering at the intensity of his words. The need in his voice. Talia swallowed.
