“I had no idea he would ever do that” Talia could feel the swell of tears clogging her throat as she blinked back more tears. Clearing her throat, Talia shook her head. “I would never have guessed...”

That the man who had once hunted and threatened her would have taken so much pain to protect her.

He had come for her. Again. She just didn’t understand it.

Letting her shoulder go and stepping back a couple of steps. Ghost took a couple of deep calming breaths, looking up at the ceiling, her hands gripping her waist.

“He kidnapped me and gave me to Draven. I didn’t think he cared.”

Staring back at her for a moment. Ghost gave a heavy sigh.

“You don’t know him at all,” Running her hand over her face, she shook her head. She took a deep breath before speaking, and her words came out more measured.

“The Inquisitors’ whip is a holy item. Because of Hydes demon blood, it is worse than silver. It carves through his flesh like butter. He can’t ignore it and he can’t heal it”,

“Will he be ok?”

“Hyde is always ok” Ghosts chin rose with the words as her glare hardened. But there was no missing the fear behind the bravo. Taking a deep breath, Talia moved to stand in front of the elevator. Pressing the small button on the wall, she waited.

“Where are you going?”

“Infirmary,” Looking over her shoulder at Ghost as the doors opened. “Which level is that on?”

“Two,” stepping into the elevator. Talia didn’t smile as Ghost moved to stand beside her.

All she could think about was Hyde. He might actually die from this. For her. Just the thought made her head spin.

The damage done to his back would have already killed a mortal man. She did not know what they needed to heal a demon werewolf. Her grandmother would know. But there was no way she could risk another call.

As the doors opened, Talia hurried behind Ghost up the hallway and through one of the large side doors.

Trying not to blink in surprise at the bright open space set up as close to a hospital as you could get

Talia shook her head at the multi-bed room with two glass rooms to the side. One set up with a surgical area, another room ready for any emergency, including chains hanging from the roof.

Hyde was face down on the bed in the emergency room. His whole body trembling in shock.

Talia’s body acted before her mind had time to catch up, propelling her towards him. Her heart tightening at the sight of his broken body. Strong, thick welts ran down the back of his legs, across his arms. But it was his back that was the worse. Skin, muscle, and sinew had been lacerated to the bone. The scent of smoke lingered in the surrounding air, rising from his deeper wounds. It must be beyond excruciating.

But before she could touch his hand, a tall guard stepped between them. His next steps forcing her backwards, one at a time. His eyes already sharpening to his wolfs pupil, glaring down at her.

“You. Dont. Get. To. Be. Here,”

“Let her be, Scythe.” Ghost’s voice was tired.

“She is one of them” his voice was adamant as he crossed his arms.

“Even more reason to let her through,”

Glaring down at her, the large man only moved aside as Ghost stepped up behind her. His anger was almost a palatable force as she stepped past.

Ignoring his glare, Talia hurried to Hyde. Her hands reaching for his, her breath catching at the coolness of his skin.

“I am so, so sorry” her eyes trying to take in the true extent of the damage that Draven had done. Her mind balking, refusing to see it as a whole. Only taking small snapshots. A bone here, torn flesh there. A part of his spine.

Wrapping her fingers around his, she brought his hand to her breast. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. He had to be all right.

“Why the Fuck is she wearing his jacket?” Scythe’s voice had deepened with each syllable, the last word almost a full growl.
