“And love?”

Taking a deep breath, her pulse loud in her ears.

“What do you want me to say?” Looking back over at him, Talia shrugged. There was no answer that she had that was going to make him happy.

“Why did you do it? Why did you call your grandmother?”

“You are going to kill me” her words were soft as she gripped the edge of the table tightly.

“What makes you think that? Ive searched for nobody but you,” staring down at her hands, she shrugged.

She had no intent of telling him of the vision she had received from her past self. The warning still ringing in her ears was more real today than it had been when she first seen it in the mirror.

“I dreamed it” wrapping her arms around herself, she ran her hands over her skin, looking for warmth in what felt like a suddenly cold room.

“Your dreams are just dreams. Without your magic, they are just imaginations gone wild.” Stepping forward, he picked up her glass of whiskey, holding it under his nose. He inhaled its scent deeply before holding it out to her.

Taking the glass, she sipped it slowly, gripping the glass so tight that her fingers barely shook. Hating the feeling of the whole deer in the headlights that his gaze gave her. The intensity of his eyes felt like he could read her mind, that he knew every tormented thought.

“In time you will come to understand how very important you are to me,”

Taking the glass from her hand, he tilted her chin to look at him.

“You are my beloved, My Queen,”

“I don’t want to be” the words were soft, but for a moment she couldn’t move, her breath catching as his brows drew together. What the hell was she doing?

“What did you say?”

“I don’t want to be your Queen” his whole body had gone still, only his hand under her chin moved to stroke over her jaw-line, his fingers leaving her skin slowly.

“You said you would give it till your birthday,”

Giving half a laugh, Talia bit back the spike of hot tears.

“I can’t do it” moving back away from him, she wrapped her arms around herself again, her head shaking. “Its too much”

“Last night must have shaken you,” he said, his voice low and tinged with sorrow that she couldn’t quite comprehend.

“I’m aware that this life is full of darkness. I rule over beings that long ago forgot what it is to be human, if they ever were,” looking up at her, his dark eyes almost impossible to read.

“I have no choice but to be cruel. I cannot show weakness.”

“Cruel?” Giving a breathy laugh, Talia ran a nervous hand through her hair, her fingers catching on her messy curls.

“Well, if that’s what you were going for, that’s what you got.”

His brow furrowing, he glowered at her.

“That was not as easy for me as you might think, But I must be the King first. “

Every instinct inside of her was screaming at her to shut up. To simply not say another word. Forcing her eyes shut, she took a deep, steadying breath. Maybe she had had just a touch too much to drink.

“I don’t want to lose you,” his voice had lowered to a soft, placating tone. “I need you. You are the only light in my world.”

“And yet,” opening her eyes, Talia ignored all the self warnings flooding her mind. “You chained me down, cut off my clothes and whipped me.”

Taking a step forward, her whole body trembling as more and more words tumbled unchecked past her lips,
