“No, we do a full re-ranking every year,” Heath said, and her brows lifted in surprise at that. He nodded at her not looking at all upset over it, as he looked to Katya. All she could see was pride in his expression. “Even after six kids, she’s still the winner when we go rounds. Since she’s not always with us though, I take command of the Alpha Squad the majority of the year.”
“But they know they also have to listen to me, which is why they were ready for my arrival today,” Katya said smiling between them as Heath’s nose caressed her cheek. “I always knew he’d make a near perfect mate and I’m definitely glad it’s for you, Aubree. Yes, we wanted him to choose a mate so he wouldn’t be alone anymore, but seeing you two together, explains exactly why he was waiting.”
“I glad he did,” she said with a sigh, a shudder rushing through her thinking of what today might have been like if Heath hadn’t waited for her.
“Shh, it’s okay, little doe. He’ll never get near you again, no one will ever hurt you again,” Heath whispered into her ear as his arms tightened around her.
“He’s right, everyone at home is going to be thrilled he finally has a mate, and they’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe. Momma and Dad are going to be thrilled to learn they’re going to get new grandbabies again. Even with the babies just now being one, they’ve been trying to talk one of us into having another,” Katya said, and Aubree smiled seeing the way Brian’s eyes lit on her. It was like seeing the way Heath looked at her earlier this morning when they talked about kids, and it warmed her through.
“Jacob and Lena said they were done after having Sara and I know Jacob meant it,” Heath said pulling her attention back to him.
“He’s worried that the hogweed will potentially harm her still,” she said, and he nodded pulling little hums from Katya.
“You told her about that?” Katya asked Heath.
“I’ve told her all about our family the last week, wanting her to know she’d not only get me, but all of you as well to love her, if she decided to let me claim her as mine. So, she also knows that the twins are long done with babies and that Landon and Shelby already caved once on being done, so I don’t anticipate it happening again. You’re the only wild card with Mom and Dad at the moment,” Heath said, making Katya laugh softly as Brian gave her a kiss.
“And I could have talked her into it last night if she hadn’t been so adamant on continuing to dip up dirt on those assholes,” Brian stated making Heath tense beneath her as they reached an airfield, where three planes sat waiting on the tarmac.
“Well, if I hadn’t kept digging, I wouldn’t know that not only was Joshua Morrow an asshole, but the others are worse bastards. Harold was fully aware of him keeping you locked in the packhouse and was extorting him for money, but he also was aware that rye flour isn’t the only thing they’re making in the factory,” Katya said, shocking her entirely. “He’s processing cocaine which both Paul and Kent are purchasing, using money from selling underage girls to snort it up their noses.”
“Why? It wouldn’t do anything to them, would it?” Aubree asked, knowing there were packs that produced drugs to sell to humans as it was simpler for them to hide the production, but she’d never heard of shifters using the substances.
“Cut with wolfsbane and it’d get them just as high as a human,” Heath told her and more than ever, she was thankful to be going far away from all of that as possible.
Chapter 10
Heath slid his arms around Aubree as they stepped out of the car, keeping her close as relief flowed through him to be home. He had his mate safe and now, he could show her what their life would be like moving forward from here. Yes, they’d have responsibilities, but it certainly wouldn’t stop him from spending every moment he could with his beautiful mate.
Stop it.Aubree’s voice slid into his mind, and he smiled, leaning down to give her a soft kiss. He couldn’t help but want her again, want all of her wrapped around him but first, he was going to do something he knew she needed.
They moved into the house, and he gave Aubree’s hip a squeeze at her wide-eyed look of panic. “It’s just home. Maybe grander than some places, but nothing to be worried about, little doe.”
“You can say that because you grew up here but I…”
“Are perfect just as you are,” he said stopping her growing worry. “You were made to be mine, which means you’re perfect. I don’t want you to ever have to use those oils again. All I want is you happy and healthy and a hundred percent mine.”
“I love you,” she whispered beneath his lips, and he pulled back before his need broke his control. Everything he did was going to be to make her happy and as much as he wanted her, as much as he knew she wanted him again, there was one more thing she needed before that.
“Love you too, little doe,” he promised, before moving to catch up with Katya and Brian as they reached the family room, where the voices were coming from.
“Where are the kids?” Katya asked drawing attention to them, but Heath knew the family couldn’t see his Aubree through Katya and Brian.
“Out with the guards, Pepper, and Mason’s kids. He’s been pacing like a wild animal since Julia still hasn’t had the new baby,” his mom told them pulling chuckles from the rest of the group.
“We weren’t expecting you quite this soon. Figured with as many emails I’ve been bombarded with from the other council members, you were likely still there telling them to shut up and calm down,” their dad added, and Heath wondered if he knew.
“And did any of them explain what happened?” Katya asked not moving further into the space yet.
“Haven’t opened any of them, we spent a couple hours with the kids after Lois and Shane got here and haven’t wanted to deal with it yet. Figured the two of you handled things and they were just complaining as usual,” their dad stated calming him immediately. Heath didn’t know why he wanted to be the one to introduce Aubree to everyone, tell them she was his, but he did.
“Are you going to hang out in the doorway or come in and join the rest of us?” Jacob asked and Katya shot him a little wink before she and Brian moved fully into the room, letting him reach the doorway with Aubree beside him. “What the…”
“Heath?” their mom said, her eyes wide as she glanced from Aubree to him, landing on his neck before she bit her lips, shocking him entirely.
“Everyone, this is Aubree,” he said, moving them further into the room as Shelby moved onto Landon’s lap quickly to keep him seated when he took note of their claim marks.
Aubree tensed as no one spoke and he slid her in front of him, smiling as he ran his hands down her arms gently soothing her.
