“Come on now, this is not the family I told her about before we got here,” he said with a pretend scowl on his face. “I mean, here I’d told her everyone would be thrilled to meet my mate, celebrate us and her birthday…”
“Birthday?!” his mom asked with a loud gasp, and he nodded, before scooping Aubree up into his arms, keeping her from being trampled as the women rushed their way.
He chuckled as Aubree let out a soft sigh, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Now this is the reaction I expected.”
“We just…you didn’t say a word!” his mom shouted at him, before lifting a hand towards Aubree. She stopped when his mate tensed, and Heath cupped her face, pressing kisses to her eyes to calm her down once more. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean…”
“It’s okay, Momma,” Katya said, giving her a hug shooting them a soft smile. “Aubree’s been through a lot the last few years. Give her some time and I’m sure she’ll be hugging up a storm with you.”
“At least you weren’t entirely stupid,” Landon said drawing looks back to him and Shelby who elbowed him in the gut. “What? I know you said we should be happy that he found someone, but I wasn’t expecting anything good to come out of that pack, let alone for him to find his actual mate. He didn’t know she was this morning.”
“I hadn’t seen her yet, didn’t know she wasn’t eighteen yet,” Heath explained as he settled into a chair, holding Aubree close to him. He gave a brief recap of things as his need for his mate deepened, until he was anxious, unable to keep his hands still as they slid over her.
“We finished the little project you requested before lunch,” Shelby said, giving them a pointed look. “You should go show Aubree.”
“Show me what?” Aubree asked, looking between them curiously.
“I called Landon to see if he and Shelby could get a space in our suite ready for you,” he admitted, loving the way her eyes softened as she looked at him. They also deepened with hunger, and he was ready to cave. “I wanted you to have something that was all yours the moment we got here, not anticipating we’d be here quite this fast though.”
“Told you he’d make a great mate,” Katya said with a grin towards the others.
“Ha,” Landon snorted, a low smirk crossing his face. “They’ve been home nearly an hour and they’re still down here.”
Shelby smacked his arm, giving him a glare as Heath’s body tensed until Aubree’s fingers soothed over his arm. “One, he’s already claimed her unlike you with me and two, he wasn’t trapped in a cage for weeks making him more animal than man.”
“You loved it so don’t deny it now, little mate,” Landon growled at her, putting a flush in her cheeks and Heath wanted nothing more than to see Aubree’s beautiful body flushed once more.
“We have one stop to make before I show you our suite,” Heath said, drawing surprised looks from the group, until Samantha showed in the doorway with his requested picnic basket and a full smile seeing Aubree on his lap.
“My mate hasn’t been able to enjoy the sunshine or go for run for three years now, so I’m remedying that before I keep her all to myself for the next few days,” he stated, standing up, not putting her down before taking the basket and his mate from the packhouse.
He knew exactly where he wanted to take her, and despite her urging that she could walk, he carried her past the training grounds and school. Past the little shops on the pack’s grounds and on into the woods as pride puffed up his chest when his pack saw him with his mate.
They stopped in a clearing along the edge of the stream, and he sat out their picnic, feeding her bites as she beamed beneath the sunlight. His need for her grew to a peak and he stood, shedding his clothes before shifting, letting his wolf get close to their mate.
He only got her for a few minutes before she slipped off her dress and let him see her gorgeous red wolf all for himself. She was just as little as he expected but she smelled like pure heaven. His wolf moved closer, running his nose down her body until he reached her ass, but before he could think of how to describe just how perfect she was, he felt a nip to his ass and his mate took off, weaving through the trees.
He let out a growl before taking off after her, catching her with ease thanks to his size, and he let their wolves have their freedom to enjoy themselves until late afternoon arrived. The instant she was back in her dress, he tossed his shirt and her underwear into the basket with the blanket, and lifted her into his arms, taking her back to the packhouse to make her his again.
The moment their bedroom door closed behind him, he moved up the steps to the tower room, setting her onto her feet in the space to let her see all of it for herself.
“Heath…”
“If there’s anything you don’t like, just tell me and I’ll get it changed,” he said seeing the sparkle of tears in her eyes.
“No…it’s perfect,” she said moving back into his arms with a full watery smile at him. “I love it. I just can’t believe you…you didn’t even know that I…”
“All I’ve wanted from the moment I met you was to make you happy, little doe. That space was your safety when you didn’t feel safe. I want this to be your space for you to come to for whatever you need. If that’s to feel safe, then so be it, but I’m going to make damn sure you’ll always be safe, never scared. If this turns out to just be a space where you can go to be by yourself, to recharge, then I’ll be very happy about it. You can do whatever you want with it and in it—well, as long as it doesn’t involve another man seeing or touching your sweet little body.”
“Never,” she promised, reaching up for a kiss and he didn’t disappoint.
His feet moved them back to the bedroom, not missing a single stair as he kept her lips pressed to his. The moment she was on the bed, his clothes were gone, and he skimmed her dress up over her head, taking in the tiny delicacy of his mate. “Stars above I don’t know how you can take all of me, little doe.”
“Then maybe you need to get down here, so you’re reminded,” she teased, putting a smile that stayed on his lips for days as he claimed every last bit of her.
He let out a frustrated sigh three days later when Katya continued to bombard him with link attempts, and he grumbled as he got up, putting on clothes to head to the door.
“What?” he asked when she gave him a smirk, her eyes sliding over his still bare shoulders.
